Grill Night!
Grill Night returns tonight and every Wednesday night through the summer at 6:30 p.m. Bring something for the grill for you and/or your family and something to share and enjoy the fellowship. It's a wonderful way to relax and chat after a long day. We are in need of a Grill Master to help with set up and minding the grill. This will be a rotating position. You can sign up to be Grill Master for the week on the sign up sheet in the Narthex or contact Susan.

Thanks from a Mitchell Scholarship Recipient

This past week we received a very kind letter from a young man who was a recipient of a Jennifer Mitchell Scholarship last year. The recipient wrote: "From the depths of my heart I would like to thank St. Anne's Episcopal Church for their generous contribution to a promising future. I would like to thank you for your generosity, which has made what was a dream a reality. I have come to believe that generosity opens doors of wisdom, knowledge and success for others. Your generosity has opened these doors in my life and I am forever grateful." The recipient has just completed his first year at Duke University.

Each year St. Anne's along with five other Reston-area religious congregations provides scholarships to high school seniors from South Lakes and Herndon High Schools. The scholarship fund was established to recognize students who have attained a solid record of achievement despite economic, family, linguistic, or other difficulties that would have impeded less dedicated and determined students. The fund is named after Jennifer Mitchell, who was a high school senior when she died in an automobile accident in 1990. Thanks to the generosity and commitment of the St. Anne's congregation, we have participated in this scholarship fund since the inception. For the past three years, St. Anne's has provided $200 in additional funds to be used toward the purchase of books and school supplies.

There will be a reception for this year's Jennifer Mitchell Scholarship recipients on Aug. 17 at 1:00 in the Library. All are invited to attend.

Food Pantry Informational Meeting

So you've been wondering: what is the Food Pantry, how do we get and distribute the food, who are our customers, why is this an important mission for St. Anne's and "how can I help?"  There will be a meeting on Sunday, June 22 in Room 1 at 11:45 a.m. after the 10:00 a.m. service. We'd love to talk to you about the food pantry, share our experiences, listen to your ideas and give you a chance to get informed and involved. Please attend if you are on our food pantry team, interested in joining or have questions about the program.

Helping Those with Disabilities Serve Community
We work closely with SPARC (Special Adapted Resource Clubs), a locally based agency that supports people with disabilities. Eager to serve the community, they've asked us to help them help others. Today we dropped off over 250 lbs of produce -- carrots, potatoes, onions, corn and cucumbers -- in large sacks for them to put into smaller packages for our Food Pantry.

Sandwiches for the Shelter

Every day the Embry Rucker Community Shelter provides lunch packages for their youth and adult guests.  At St. Anne's we gather together every 4-6 weeks for about 2 hours on a Saturday morning to make 120 lunches including sandwiches and other goodies.  This mission is good for all ages: last month one of our 4 year olds was putting condiment packages in bags, its a great way to let children give back to their community.  When you signup there'll also be food items that you can volunteer to bring.  After the lunches are assembled in the Narthex at St. Anne's 1 or 2 cars will deliver them to the shelter where staff distributes them.  We'll be doing Sandwiches for the Shelter on July 5, a wonderful opportunity to serve during Independence Day weekend.  To signup for this visit visit http://tinyurl.com/owfxoul.  If you have any questions contact Emily McPhie.

Can You Spare a Few Hours to Feed Hungry Kids?
So when summer arrives what happens to children who got free lunches during the school year? St. Anne's partners with Cornerstones and Fairfax County on a Summer Feeding Program to serve summer lunch at the Cedar Ridge Community Center  to children who are entitled to free or reduced price lunches during the school year. The program operates Monday through Friday beginning June 30 and running through August. Volunteers are needed between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to set up, serve lunch and clean up at the Cedar Ridge Community Center at 1601 Becontree Road near the Forest Edge School. While a once a week commitment is optimal you can sign up for as many or as few days as you'd like. If you are interested, contact Carol Hurlburt (703-264-9054).
