Did You Know?

It was commonly called "Mob Football," no it was not trying to get a hotdog at halftime at the Super Bowl. It was common in northern England from the 12th century until "The Highway Act of 1835" was passed by Parliament , outlawing the event. Apparently the game was played on public roadways, on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.   Often played between two villages, the only time the game was stopped was when the round object chosen, we have no good information about whether that round object was necessarily a ball, was either kicked, thrown, or punched into the boundaries of the opposing team or until "mayhem or murder" was committed. Pancake Suppers seem pretty tame in comparison.

Mardi Gras in France, Faschnact in Switzerland, Fasching in Germany, Fat Tuesday in England, Pustni torek in Slovenia, throughout Christendom the tradition of celebrating on the day before Ash Wednesday has been special. For some, the rationale was using up all the rich foods in the larder, hence making pancakes. For many it has always been a great day to have a party. Sometimes it's even an opportunity to make a political statement. In the early days of the Reformation the city of Basel, Switzerland, in protest against the Church moved i's Faschnacht celebration to the first Tuesday after Ash Wednesday, which is still the custom today.

Whatever the reason, Shrove Tuesday (the next day we are shriven of our sins) as it is often called today, is a great time to get together. Come join us on Tuesday, March 4 at 6:30 in the Great Hall for a Mardi Gras potluck supper. We are in need of some organizers. If you are interested in helping with the event, please contact Susan.

A Celebration of St. Anne's -- This Sunday at 10:00
This Sunday we will be combining our 9:00 and 11:15 service for A Celebration of St. Anne's which will begin at 10:00. The service will focus on our action inside and outside the walls of our church and will also include the annual meeting. Afterwards there'll be will be a great chance to talk with folks who are involved with dozens of our missions including our Food Pantry, Youth Group, EfM, etc. There will also be light refreshments served in the Great Hall. Because there'll be so much going on that day there'll be no Sunday School or children's music.  It's going to be an amazing and fun event and we hope you'll join us!

Closing the Gap but Still Short
When Vestry met on the budget, we as a congregation were $80,000 short of the resources we need to maintain St. Anne's as a vibrant and caring Christian community answering the call to minister to each other and to the world beyond our walls. Our community responded and closed the gap substantially, but we are still $47,000 short. There are many families who have pledged in 2012 and 2013 who have not yet pledged for 2014, please prayerfully consider making your pledge to keeping our community strong. There are many new families for whom pledging financial support at the beginning of a year may be a new concept. Please consider making a first time pledge because our budget is based on the commitments from the congregation and that every pledge, large or small, makes a huge difference. Nearly 100 of our 247 pledgers have increased their level of giving for 2014. Please prayerfully consider joining that group.

Pledges can be made online at  or by completing a pledge card (available in the narthex) and dropping it in the collection plate or mailing it to the office.

Thank you.

Lunch for the Soul Planning Meeting
ˇHola St. Anne's! We are well on our way to a strong relationship with Lunch For The Soul based out of Trinity Presbyterian in Herndon.  It is clear that as a church we are excited to help this unique program, however, for some of us, Wednesday mornings are not a workable time slot.  On Sunday, Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. in Room 1 we will have a planning meeting to brainstorm other ways we can support our day laborer neighbors. If you have any questions please contact Katrina Alexander  (703-328-5206).

Clean Out your Closets and Donate Coats for OAR

Help provide a warm, fresh start to those who are newly released from prison with your gently used coats. Fairfax OAR (Opportunities, Alternatives, Resources) needs used men's/women's coats, S-XXL. The collection box is in the narthex. This has been a record year for donation, thanks to all who have already given so generously! OAR told us of a man released from prison during a snow storm when everything was closed, but they were able to give him a warm coat for his new life. We also need volunteers to help take the coats to Fairfax weekly. Check out the OAR websiteAny questions, contact Jackie Wooldridge or by calling 703-819-2346.
