Did You Know?

Noted author and NPR political commentator Cokie Roberts just issued a children's version, with great illustrations, of her book "Founding Women." It describes the greatest heroes of our history that we never read about in school. I'm going to make sure that a copy gets into the hands of my grandkids.

Just as Martha Washington, Abigail and Deborah Franklin have not been recognized for the essential roles they played in the forming of our country, so early Christian women like Dorcas, Lydia, and Phoebe are not well known. Luke's recounting of Paul's missionary travels talks about how these women were instrumental in the formation of their communities; Lydia in Philippi, Phoebe in Cenchreae (near Corinth) and Dorcas in Joppa. Lydia was the Bible's first European convert. A purveyor of expensive cloth, she offered Paul a place to stay while he worked in Philipi.

Paul mentions Phoebe first as he lists the leaders of the Corinthian church in the last chapter of his letter to the Romans. He calls her sister, deacon, and patroness. Dorcas, known as a woman of great compassion and an indefatigable worker for the poor became ill and died while Paul was in Joppa. Paul, experiencing the profound grief of all those who loved her, brings Dorcas back to life.

Being a Christian and being someone who lives in the United States are two essential elements of my identity and I imagine yours too. When we leave out, when we don't acknowledge the contributions of, and tell the formational stories about half the people who have been so important in the foundation of that identity can we really know who we are? Abigail Adams once wrote to her husband that the women were the greater patriots. While they (the women) sacrificed and suffered equally, it was the men who would get the acclaim and eventually the power. This will become less and less true as we learn more about and recognize the role of our founding mothers.

Thank You

Dear St. Anne's family,

So many of you offered your help with the services that were held on Sunday and Monday for Don Flynn, from food for the reception, ushers, altar guild, flower guild, set up, clean up, etc. You rose to the occasion.  Words cannot express our gratitude to all of you for showing once again how special this St. Anne's community is. We believe that Don would have been very proud of his church family. We know that we are. Thank you for all that you did.

In love and peace,

Fr. Jim, Rev. Laura, David, Susan, Amiee, & Tim

A Celebration of St. Anne's

On Feb. 9 we will be combining our 9:00 and 11:15 service for A Celebration of St. Anne's which will begin at 10:00. The service will focus on our action inside and outside the walls of our church and will also include the annual meeting. Afterwards there'll be will be a great chance to talk with folks who are involved with dozens of our missions including our Food Pantry, Youth Group, EfM, etc. There will also be light refreshments served in the Great Hall. Because there'll be so much going on that day there'll be no Sunday School or children's music.  It's going to be an amazing and fun event and we hope you'll join us!

Meeting for Greeters & Newcomers Committee
We are looking for new volunteers to join us to discuss these important ministries.  Our greeters welcome everyone into the church on Sunday mornings, and we are in need of some new volunteers.  We also hope to add new members to our Newcomers Committee. This committee is responsible for our Newcomers' Coffee hours, which introduces St. Anne's to new members. We believe that these two ministries can work together to help make visitors and new members feel warmly welcomed. Please consider joining us on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 11 a.m. in the Library. If you have any questions please contact Susan Allen.

Hypothermia Help

During this record-breaking cold weather, it's more important than ever to help those who have no place to call home.  St. Anne's will be supporting Holy Comforter in Vienna hosting a hypothermia shelter February 2-9. The shelter will be open 12 hours a day, and will serve homeless men and women alike to bring them out of the cold.

St. Anne's volunteers will be staffing three shifts, and we're still looking for volunteers for the Wednesday, Feb. 5 for the morning shift from 4 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. (the breakfast/clean up shift). Please click here to visit our signup genius and volunteer.

If this time doesn't work for you but you would still like to volunteer, please sign up directly with Holy Comforter's online signup sheet and also touch base with  Tim Barwick). If using the Holy Comforter signup sheet, please put "StA" after your name to indicate you are with St. Anne's.

The FACETS hypothermia prevention shelter program is operated November to March each year, with more than 40 faith-based communities participating. This is a great opportunity to provide badly needed face-to-face services to those most in need. Please note: Holy Comforter has asked for volunteers no younger than high school, and they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.  If you have any questions contact Tim Barwick.

Clean Out your Closets and Donate Coats for OAR

Help provide a warm, fresh start to those who are newly released from prison with your gently used coats. Fairfax OAR (Opportunities, Alternatives, Resources) needs used men's/women's coats, S-XXL. The collection box is in the narthex. This has been a record year for donation, thanks to all who have already given so generously! OAR told us of a man released from prison during a snow storm when everything was closed, but they were able to give him a warm coat for his new life. We also need volunteers to help take the coats to Fairfax weekly. Check out the OAR websiteAny questions, contact Jackie Wooldridge or by calling 703-819-2346.
