Did You Know?
In Father Jim's sermon on Sunday, he read the poem below. Here, is the poem, titled The Summer Day, for you to consider on this winter's day. Sunday's sermon and all sermons can be found on our website.

The Summer Day
By Mary Oliver

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean-
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down-
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.
Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.
I don't know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,
how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,
which is what I have been doing all day.
Tell me, what else should I have done?
Doesn't everything die at last, and too soon?
Tell me, what is it you plan to do
with your one wild and precious life?

Round Table Discussion about Gun Violence
Please join us on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 7:00 p.m. for a facilitated round table discussion on the issue of gun violence in our society. In August, Bishop Johnston asked the churches within the Diocese of Virginia to work toward reducing gun violence. To read Bishop Johnston's August letter, please click here. In addition, the summer edition of the Virginia Episcopal magazine published an article on the Diocese's response to the call to reduce gun violence. That article can be read by clicking here.

A Celebration of St. Anne's

On Feb. 9 we will be combining our 9:00 and 11:15 service for A Celebration of St. Anne's which will begin at 10:00. The service will focus on our action inside and outside the walls of our church and will also include the annual meeting. Afterwards there'll be will be a great chance to talk with folks who are involved with dozens of our missions including our Food Pantry, Youth Group, EfM, etc. There will also be a light lunch served in the Great Hall. As part of our celebration we're asking you to let us know one word that captures what St. Anne's means to you. We know it might be tough to find just one word, however, if you send that in an email to oneword@stannes-reston.org you'll see the results on at the meeting. Because there'll be so much going on that day there'll be no Sunday School or children's music.  It's going to be an amazing and fun event and we hope you'll join us!

Lunch for the Soul

Lunch For the Soul (LFTS), aka Almuerzo Para la Alma, is currently a three church collaborative effort that operates out of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon. Together, these three churches serve our neighbors the day laborer community. LFTS gathers every Wednesday in the early afternoon to share a hearty three-course home cooked meal, delight in music, and enjoy a sermon in Spanish. St. Anne's is excited to add one more link to this already strong chain and jump into helping to serve this amazing community. Our first opportunity will be on Wednesday, Jan. 22, we'll meet at 10 a.m. to prepare the food, which is supplied for us, and serve at noon. Cleanup is done by 1:30pm. Spanish language skills are not required. Please click here to signup and get involved. For more information please contact Katrina Alexander (703-328-5602).

Day for All People

St. Anne's is a member of Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy a non-profit organization an important advocacy resource for faith-based organizations primarily focused on state legislative issues. They create a space where Virginians can promote faith voices on issues such as poverty and the working poor, at-risk children and caring for God's creation. Their mission aligns very closely with that of St. Anne's and I've found their work to build consensus across political parties to be refreshing and in line with that of our new Governor.

I encourage you to join Father Jim and myself at Virginia Interfaith's Day for All People on Tuesday, Jan 21 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center for a day of fellowship, education and advocacy. The morning will include policy briefings, we'll meet with our Senators and Delegates and observe committee hearings and floor sessions. There'll be a lunch and an afternoon speaker. There is a cost of $30 to cover food and other expenses and the registration deadline is Jan. 17. Please click here to see the flyer and learn more about the event.

A bus will leave from United Christian Parish (UCP) at 6:00 a.m. and return at 3:00 p.m. The bus is free but you must RSVP to reserve your seat by Jan. 17 by contacting Sherry Hoover (804-643-2474 x114).  When reserving please include your name, email, cell number and pickup location (UCP).

Who's My Legislator

In the coming weeks we're going to be updating you on Virginia Interfaith thoughts on upcoming legislation. As active participants in the world around us we encourage you to read and educate yourselves about the issues at hand and let your legislators know how you feel. Even if you believe they're already aligned with your position another voice is always helpful. Unsure who is your senator or delegate? Please click here to learn more.

Sandwiches for the Shelter

The Embry Rucker homeless shelter makes bag lunches available every day for both shelter residents and those who do not live at the shelter but who use shelter services.  St. Anne's has begun regularly contributing to the shelter's lunch supply; our next sandwich making effort will be Saturday, Jan. 25, from 10:30 a.m. until we're done (usually 30-45 minutes). As with our last two times, we'll be making 120 bags (240 sandwiches) and, again, to help defray costs, we're asking at least some of you to bring some of the lunch items we need. Children old enough to help make lunches are very welcome! Click here to sign up, please go to or contact Emily McPhie.

Hypothermia Help

Are you willing to challenge your preconceived notions of who is homeless in our area? If so, come help staff the hypothermia shelter at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna the first week of February. St. Anne's will be teaming up with Holy Comforter and FACETS to give up to 25 homeless men and women a place to stay warm, sleep, eat, and enjoy some fellowship. St. Anne's is looking to staff at least one dinner shift Tuesday, Feb. 4 from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. We will need 8 to 10 people to staff that shift; if there is sufficient interest, we can place volunteers in four-hour shifts into the night and the next morning. If you are unable to help Tuesday but can work a four-hour shift any other day between Feb. 2 - 8, your help is welcome. The shelter is open 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. each day, and there will be both Holy Comforter and FACETS staff on site at all times. Holy Comforter is a short 15-minute drive from Reston and is easy to reach. Holy Comforter has asked younger volunteers to be in at least eighth grade, and they must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. We are also seeking donations of travel-sized toiletries or accessories such as hats, scarves, gloves or mittens. Please click here to sign up online for the Feb. 4 shift

Clean Out your Closets and Donate Coats for OAR

Help provide a warm, fresh start to those who are newly released from prison with your gently used coats. Fairfax OAR (Opportunities, Alternatives, Resources) needs used men's/women's coats, S-XXL. The collection box is in the narthex. This has been a record year for donation, thanks to all who have already given so generously! OAR told us of a man released from prison during a snow storm when everything was closed, but they were able to give him a warm coat for his new life. We also need volunteers to help take the coats to Fairfax weekly. Check out the OAR websiteAny questions, contact Jackie Wooldridge or by calling 703-819-2346.
