Amherst, MA - By popular demand, beginning Saturday, Feb. 15, the Mead Art Museum will host Family Fun Day on a regular monthly basis. Family Fun Days will take place on the third Saturday every month, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The family-friendly activities for children of all ages are free and open to the public.
"Family Fun Days have been so popular in the past, we decided to make them even more frequent," noted Wendy Somes, Coordinator of Community Programs. The increase is part of the Mead's ongoing mission to connect families, teachers, and community organizations with their local art museum, she said. "We believe that museums are educational AND fun places for families to learn together."
Each month features a different theme designed to engage children and caregivers with the Mead's art collection in a new and fun way. Family Fun Days offer ongoing drop-in craft activities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a kid-friendly gallery talk at 1 p.m. led by Mead education staff. The 1 p.m. gallery talks, intended for ages 3 and older, are interactive and include a reading of a thematically linked picture book.
Upcoming dates and themes are:
Saturday, February 15: feasts and medieval life
Saturday, March 15: portraits and costume
Saturday, April 19: animals, nature, and landscapes
Saturday, May 17: color, shapes, and textures
Saturday, June 21: Fizz, Boom, Read! Summer Reading Program kick-off with the Beneski Museum of Natural History and the Jones Public Library
The Mead's Family Fun Days series is made possible by the Friends of the Mead Art Museum.
