Jabil CEO conversation kicks off new event series
Jabil Circuit CEO Mark Mondello runs a company that far surpasses the term of "local business." While Jabil is a complex global business, the lessons Mondello gleaned from his career at the Fortune 200 company are still fairly simple. Charitable Gift Totaling $2.9 Million to Help Young Entrepreneurs in Florida
The next generation of start-up leaders are getting support to make it in the business world from a couple who began launching businesses seven decades ago. Naples entrepreneurs Frank and Ellen Daveler donated $2.9 million to the University of South Florida's Muma College of Business to spearhead a state-wide effort to educate entrepreneurs. Read more.

State of Florida Healthcare Innovation Competition seeks next generation of health ideas
An invention that converts body heat to power for medical devices. A pressure-sensitive implantable pump that helps treat eye diseases. A detachable, self-cleansing mouth mirror. While these might sound like something straight out of the sick bay in Star Trek, these are all real inventions designed to be big solutions for big needs in the healthcare industry - and, they're inventions by college students in Florida. USF business, English Researchers team up to create educational app
Researchers and students at the University of South Florida have developed an online learning tool that some people think may change the way English courses are taught. And now the National Science Foundation grant has rewarded USF with a $50,000 grant from its Innovation Corps program, which aims to help universities turn research discoveries into viable products. Read more.
Undergraduate MIS program increases focus on analytics, changes name of degree
Responding to changing business and industry demands, the University of South Florida is enhancing its MIS major - keeping in the important information systems content but including more coursework that focuses on analytics and business intelligence skills related to "big data." Starting in the fall, USF's Bachelor of Science in MIS will be known as the Bachelor of Science in Business Analytics and Information Systems. The undergraduate minor will also change names and focus more on analytics. Read more.
USF Muma College of Business partners with IBM to create the next generation of citizen data scientists
In a continuing effort to help give students a competitive edge in the workforce, the University of South Florida Muma College of Business is partnering with IBM Watson Analytics. Through this new relationship, each student will be entitled to a subscription of Watson™ Analytics Student Edition at no cost. Read more.
USF MBA alumnus to appear on "Shark Tank"  April 8
An Orlando connected toy startup co-founded by USF alumnus Chris Harden ('07, MBA), TROBO the Storytelling Robot, will be featured on ABC's Shark Tank on Friday, April 8 at 9 p.m. Eastern time.  TROBO features a talking plush toy and iPad/iPhone application that aims to get kids 2-5 years old thinking about the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in the world around them through personalized, interactive stories. Best of luck to Chris and his co-founder, Jeremy Scheinberg.

New Real Estate Club at Muma College of Business

 

A group of students in the Muma College of Business recently formed The Real Estate Society at USF. The club's purpose is to help other students learn more about real estate-related careers, and to create networking opportunities with real estate professionals from the greater Tampa area. The group's faculty advisor, real estate professor Greg Smersh, is seeking alumni from the local real estate community to serve as guest speakers or to have students visit local companies for discussions about corporate real estate and industry trends.  The group's next meeting will be held on April 12 in BSN 225, and all majors are welcome.

  • Janet Jackson joined the dean's office as executive assistant to the dean. She was previously with the USF College of Education.
  • Finance Instructor Greg Smersh had a paper published in the Journal of Risk and Insurance, "The Capitalization of Homeowners Insurance Premiums in House Prices."
  • Marketing Instructor Jill Solomon was honored as Educator of the Year by the Tampa Bay chapter of the American Marketing Association.
Alumni Notes
  • Carl Lum ('85, Accounting, and '89, MBA) has served as Busch Gardens Williamsburg and Water Country USA Park President since 2010.  SeaWorld recently announced that he will take on the same role at SeaWorld in San Antonio, Texas.  He has been with SeaWorld Entertainment since 1999.
  • Anthony Morrison ('11, Business Administration) was previously with CNN's New Day and currently works for ABC's Good Morning America as the director of social media. He also owns his owns his own photography business, Anthony Morrison Photography. A former 25 Under 25 honoree, Morrison is also a photographer for Disney Weddings. 
  • Marcos Gonzalez ('15, Accounting & Economics) is an associate private equity analyst with the Weatherford Partners, an investment firm in Tampa.  He is a former 25 Under 25 honoree.
