Co-President's Message
Dear Vanderlyn Families,

We have a lot going on at Vanderlyn this week! We have Awards Days Monday and Tuesday, and then on Wednesday and Thursday we are hosting Field Days.  Friday we celebrate our Fifth Grade students as we have a celebration in their honor. When you come to the school this week, remember that parking will be at a premium, and you must sign in when you come to the campus.

Please prepare this weekend for Awards Day by locating your student's lanyard if you have not already done so. This tradition was started last year with the expectation that students return annually with their beribboned medallion, which will become more heavily decorated as they complete more academic accomplishments.

Be sure to take a look around our school if you can be present this week. The grounds look amazing!  We are all grateful to our Grounds co-chairs Sarah Parrish and Dawn Weterings. Their vision and efforts have transformed the entrances to the school.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week concluded a week ago under the leadership of Jennifer Cohen, Courtney Kuriger and Laura Potts. This group and their committee celebrated our amazing teachers and staff with a Dr. Seuss-inspired week of events.  We thank these ladies for showing our staff so creatively how much they are appreciated.

Less visible but equally important are the advancements to our STEM initiative. Obviously, STEM co-chairs Jennifer Green and Ashok Narayan had a lot to do in supporting Mrs. Crenshaw and Vanderlyn's STEM application. The STEM committee was new this year, and we thank these folks for defining how the PTA can support our students in the fields of Science, Engineering, Technology and Math.

Our amazing volunteer corps accomplished so much this year with the financial support of our community.  The One Check, One Time annual fund campaign generated approximately $70,000!  Additionally, our VanderDash was so well-managed that the race generated a profit of nearly $20,000, which the PTA Board of Directors has directed toward building improvements and classroom technology. While money does not guarantee happiness, it is necessary to do all that has been done at Vanderlyn over the years.

I've been a co-president of the Vanderlyn PTA organization for two years, and I'm stepping aside for our fresh, new leadership. We are lucky to have them! And I have been lucky to volunteer in this capacity at Vanderlyn. I've made relationships and friendships in my community that I wouldn't have otherwise. My kids are proud of me. I have a deeper understanding of education and the process involved. I say this as a prelude to encouraging all parents with the time to do so to be involved at our school. We need you you!

In 2008, I entered Vanderlyn for the first time with my then-kindergarten student. The first day of school, his teacher Mrs. Pine hosted passed out Teabags and Tissues for nervous mothers. And in a figurative blink of an eye,he has aged six years and grown two feet.  I am happy to have been able to support him by volunteering at school. If you see me at his celebration on Friday, pass me a tissue.

Have a great summer!  See you at registration!

One Time - Auditor Needed
The Vanderlyn PTA organization seeks a CPA or individual with a financial background to assist in completing our annual PTA Audit.  This commitment is short-term and needed to ensure that our organization is operating properly in our financial management.  Please contact Frank Quinn if you will consider this task.
Spirit Night - Yogli Mogli

Plan to attend the FINAL SPIRIT NIGHT of the 2013-2014 school year at Yogli Mogli on the LAST DAY of SCHOOL! It will begin when school lets out and continue until 9 p.m.  A percentage of the sales made by Vanderlyn families will be donated to the school.  Yogli Mogli is located in the Kroger shopping center off Dunwoody Club Drive. Don't miss this chance to kick off the summer, enjoy time with friends, & support the school!

2014-2015 Committee Chairs Needed!
Thank you to all of our wonderful parent volunteers who have given so generously of their time this year. As we look forward to another successful year, we are in need of committee chairs or co-chairs for the following committees:

  • DCPC
  • Yearbook
  • Grounds
  • Hospitality
  • International
  • Citizenship/Social Concerns
  • STEM
  • Organic Gardens
  • Spirit Wear
  • Lunch Bunch

If you are interested in chairing one of these committees, or if you would like more information, please contact Jodi Rosenberg.

Field Day Update
Because your child's safety and enjoyment of this day is in the forefront of our minds, we postponed Field Day for both lower and upper grades to the this week.

Grades 3-5 will now have Field Day on Wednesday, May 21 from 8:15 a.m. until 11:30am.  A picnic lunch, class parties, and fun in the field will follow their Field Day.

Grades PK-2 will now have Field Day on Thursday, May 22 from 8:15 a.m. until 11 a.m.  A picnic lunch and class parties will follow their Field Day.

The change in dates has affected some of our volunteer's ability to help. Please visit the attached Sign Up Genius to see the new date and time information.

If you can still volunteer, fantastic!  No other work is needed.

If you can not volunteer anymore, please remove your name as soon as possible so that others may fill that spot.

If you had not signed up and now can, please visit the appropriate link below and find a fun place to help out!

5th Grade Parents
The awards ceremony on Friday, May 23 will begin at 8:30 a.m. Please have your child bring in their lariat (given at last year's ceremony)to wear at the ceremony. In the letter sent home, it stated the start time would be 9 a.m., that is incorrect.

SchoolKidz, Inc. - Supply Kids Available.

Vanderlyn PTA will once again offer the service of purchasing school supply kits online! This year, we will be using the convenient services of SchoolKidz, Inc. and their Teacher Tailored® back-to-school supply kit program. Why fight long lines trying to find every single requested item on your child's supply list? Let SchoolKidz do the shopping for you!

SchoolKidz, Inc. offers brand name items, such as Crayola®, Fiskars® and Elmer's® and Staples. Each kit is assembled with exactly what is on your child's supply list. Best of all, the entire package comes in a reusable personalized kit.

This program will save you time, making "back-to-school time" less hectic and more enjoyable for both students and parents. We believe you will find the pricing to be very reasonable. All kits will be delivered to the school and will be available for pick up at Meet and Greet in August.

The sale will run from May 1 through May 31, and no orders can be accepted after that date.

Go to www.shopttkits.com and enter account #84234 to place your order!
