Principal's Message
Dear Vanderlyn Family,

Earlier this week, the Georgia Department of Education released the 2013 College & Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI) scores for all schools. Changes were made in the calculation of this score to reflect a higher emphasis on student progress along with student achievement. The 2012 scores were recalculated to allow for an accurate comparison of school performance over these two years. The initial CCRPI Vanderlyn received for 2012 was a 97.1. With the adjusted calculations, the 2012 score for Vanderlyn was 94.2. The 2013 score was 95.2. With a slight gain, Vanderlyn shows consistency, sustainability and growth in academic achievement over this two year period! We ranked in the top 5 elementary schools in the DCSD in progress, overall score and schools scoring above state average.

Our entire school community should be very proud of these scores! The score takes into account a number of different measures including student achievement, student progress, and a gap closure rating where they compare how well we are closing the achievement gap between our top and bottom performers.  This score is a direct correlation to the high levels of teaching and learning that permeate our school culture as well as a reflection of the great work our teachers are doing on behalf of our students.

The CRCT our students are currently taking will be used to calculate the 2014 CCRPI score. Additional data sources are also used which help provide a more thorough and accurate measure of student achievement at Vanderlyn. Because our teachers have worked very hard this school year promoting mastery of the Common Core Curriculum standards, I have great confidence that our students will succeed at high levels on this exam! Please be sure to support us in making sure that your child is well-rested, well-fed, and well-prepared to do their best on the final round of tests next week!

While we are very proud of our academic progress, we are committed to our continuous school improvement plan that focuses on the following:
  • Student data talks and grade level collaboration that meet weekly to analyze grade level and student specific data with the goal of defining instructional strategies to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Professional Learning Communities that focus on teacher development and best-teaching practices.
  • Professional teacher training in Common Core Mathematics and ELA/Reading as well as Science and Social Studies instruction.
  • STEM Initiative to promote academic rigor in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and provide challenging "real world" experiences.
  • Extended Learning Time to include smaller numbers of students who may require math/reading support.

We feel optimistic about the programs we have implemented and feel confident that our strategic efforts will yield positive learning outcomes for the students. In the 2014-2015 school year, we will be expanding the opportunities for students to express their knowledge through STEM real-world applications and project-based learning. We are excited about the challenges ahead and are confident that we will continue to provide exciting, valuable learning experiences for all students.

Thank you all for your partnership with Vanderlyn Elementary School! I am looking forward to a fantastic finish to the 2013-2014 school year!

Your Proud Principal,
Mrs. Crenshaw
Co-President's Message
Dear Vanderlyn Parents,

The Vanderlyn parent/teacher community convened this week for the third and final general meeting of the year.  We were fortunate to pass the slate of officers to serve as our leadership for the 2014-15 school year. The individuals prepared to take over the organization next year are fantastic individuals, and we have started referring to them as the Dream Team. These folks are committed to our school and students, and they are collectively and individually educated, experienced, and talented.  We encourage you to become involved at Vanderlyn under their leadership next year.  Their leadership plus your participation will yield dynamic results!

In the meantime, we have only one month of school remaining. Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week begins May 5, and shortly after that we will host Field Days.  Please support these activites as you are able, and know that your support makes a positive impact.

As always, we appreciate what you do for the students at Vanderlyn.

Have a terrific week!
Julia LeDoyen and Christine Kelemen
Teacher Appreciation Week

May 5 through 9, 2014

Vanderlyn PTA continues an important tradition of celebrating the hard work of our dedicated Vanderlyn staff! This year's inspiration is the whimsy of Dr. Seuss.  We have scheduled activities throughout the week and will ask for volunteers to contribute in many different ways both prior to the week and during the week of festivities.  Please join the fun and get involved! All information will be shared with you via your Room Parent and VIPs.

New ActivTable is Here!
It finally is here! Vanderlyn Elementary received a Promethean ActivTable this week for the Media Center. The purchase of the ActivTable was made possible by the Collaboration Causes Learning Grant awarded to Melinda Carroll and Gail Pansini. The ActivTable will encourage project-based activities where the students will interact and collaborate, sharing knowledge and the ability to work together towards a common goal. The multi-user interactive table will allow up to six learners to simultaneously use individual tools, web browsers and other resources, like having the students navigate maps and roam the world's oceans in geography, share virtual money in a math lesson, or investigate creatures in science. The possibilities are endless!

When you get a chance, stop by the Media Center and check out our new ActivTable!

2014-15 School Council Elections
The Vanderlyn School Council is the advisory body to the principal. Members give advice and recommendations on matters that pertain to school attendance and achievement, capital improvement plans, curriculum, budget, and school/community communication strategies. Membership consists of the principal, three elected teacher representatives, two appointed business community members, and seven elected parent representatives.

According to school council by-laws, parent representatives are nominated and elected by the parent community of Vanderlyn. Starting this week and continuing through May 9, 2014, there will be a nomination and election process to fill three parent representative vacancies.

Parent representatives serve two-year terms, starting August 2014 and continuing through May 2016. To be eligible to run for a parent representative position, a parent must have at least one child at Vanderlyn during that time frame.

The time commitment of a council member involves approximately three hours per month, which is primarily time spent in our council meetings. These meetings have traditionally been held the third Monday of each month. The timing of this process is as follows:

4/22     Nomination Forms sent out via Viking Views

4/24:    Nomination Forms sent out in VIPs

4/30:    Nomination Forms due; candidates notified

5/2:      Candidate biographies due at noon/Biographies posted
            on Vanderlyn website

5/9:      Elections held at school (7 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

5/12:    New school council parent representatives attend last
meeting of the year (8 a.m.)

We have three positions coming open on Vanderlyn's School Council for the upcoming term. Please consider nominating yourself or someone you know for these slots. Again, nominees must have at least one child at Vanderlyn during the next two school years. Please confirm with the individual prior to nominating him/her. These nominations are due no later than April 30 at 6 p.m.
