Principal's Message
Dear Parent(s):

Georgia law, as amended by the A+ Education Reform Act of 2000, requires that all students in Grades 3-8 take the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) in the content areas of Reading, English Language Arts, and Mathematics.  Students in these grade levels are also assessed in Science and Social Studies. For students in Grades 3, 5, and 8, this assessment serves as a promotion requirement as required by state law.  In some specific cases, students will take the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test - Modified (CRCT-M) in Reading, English Language Arts, and/or Mathematics rather than the CRCT.

Below is the schedule for the administration of the CRCT and CRCT-M in the DeKalb County School District.  It is imperative that students attend school each day and arrive on time so they will not miss any sections of this important assessment.

Tuesday, April 22, 2014
Reading - CRCT/CRCT-M

Wednesday, April 23, 2014
English Language Arts - CRCT/CRCT-M

Thursday, April 24, 2014
Mathematics - CRCT/CRCT-M

Tuesday, April 29, 2014
Science - CRCT only

Wednesday, April 30, 2014
Social Studies - CRCT only

The purpose of these tests is to measure student performance in the content areas listed above. By teaching the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) in reading, English/language arts, and mathematics and the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) in science and social studies, our teachers have been diligently preparing students for these tests since the beginning of the school year.  We are confident that our students are prepared.

You can help by taking the following steps:
  • Limit evening activities prior to testing so that adequate time is provided for rest.
  • Discuss the importance of testing with your son/daughter.
  • Provide two #2 pencils daily.
  • Provide a nutritious breakfast.
  • Ensure your child is present and on time each morning. If possible, please avoid scheduling doctor/dentist appointments during the testing period.
  • If an issue arises that may impact your child's performance, please contact the school counselor.
Parents of students enrolled in Grades 3 and 5, will be notified in early May 2014 if their student is required to participate in the Re-Test Administration in order to gain promotion to the next grade level. The Re-test is scheduled for the week of May 19, 2014.  Individual student score reports for all students in Grades 3-8 are expected to arrive in the district by the middle of June 2014.

If you have questions regarding any aspect of testing, please contact the school at (678) 874-9002

Respectfully,
Mrs. Crenshaw
Principal

Teacher Appreciation Week

May 5 through 9, 2014

Vanderlyn PTA continues an important tradition of celebrating the hard work of our dedicated Vanderlyn staff! This year's inspiration is the whimsy of Dr. Seuss.  We have scheduled activities throughout the week and will ask for volunteers to contribute in many different ways both prior to the week and during the week of festivities.  Please join the fun and get involved! All information will be shared with you via your Room Parent and VIPs.

DeKalb County Arts Star Award

Congratulations to the following students for being nominated for the first annual DeKalb County School District Arts Star Award:

  1. Rose Salus - 2nd Grade
  2. Grace Bomar - 2nd Grade
  3. Ryan Stewart - 4th Grade
  4. Rose Lubin - 5th Grade

The Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, April 17, 2014 at 6:00 pm in the AIC auditorium. There are five regions in the DeKalb County School District and there was "ONE" chosen ARTS STAR per region for the elementary, middle and high school level.

The ARTS STARS were nominated by their teachers based on the following 5 STAR qualities:

STAR ONE: Final grade of 90 or better in nominating teachers' class

STAR TWO: Mastery of skill/technique observed by teacher

STAR THREE:

Community involvement in the Arts (Beyond school)

STAR FOUR:Demonstration of leadership/mentoring skills observed by nominating teacher

STAR FIVE:Dedication/passion for craft observed by nominating teacher

This was a great opportunity to spotlight all of the talented students involved as each student selected displayed all or some of the above qualities.

Vanderlyn is appreciative to the DeKalb County School District for embracing Arts Education and proud of our outstanding students who received this prestigious honor!

It is not often that a man can make opportunities for himself. But he can put himself in such shape that when or if the opportunities come, he is ready.
