Co-Presidents' Message
The month of January flew by! As we venture into February, I cannot help but look to our calendar and all that the remainder of the year holds.

We have a couple of big tasks to undertake. First, the season of slating officers for next year is almost upon us.  We follow a process identified in our bylaws that requires we form a nominating committee that discreetly suggests, considers and communicates with candidates to serve in officer capacities for the upcoming year. Serving on the nominating committee requires a short-term commitment, and individuals who are acquainted with a lot of folks in the Vanderlyn community bring the most to this committee.  If you would like to learn more about serving on the nominating committee, please contact us via email with your questions or to express your willingness.

VanderDash is scheduled for Saturday, March 22.  Our committee chairs and their leaders have been working on this event already, but we need a lot more help.  You will see a call for VanderDash volunteers below, so please give it careful consideration.  This event will not be a success without the volunteer support of a lot of people.

VanderDash is a meaningful event for our school.  While it is intended to be a community building function, the sponsorships have been very profitable.  Last year, the money VanderDash generated enabled the PTA to invest over $20,000 in various ways that support our STEM initiative, including valuable teacher training and a mobile computer lab.

We hope to see you and your students at the race.  Until then, have a great week!

Julia LeDoyen and Christine Kelemen

Chick-fil-A Spirit Night
Chick-fil-A
Plan to attend SPIRIT NIGHT at Chick-fil-A on Thursday, February 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Fifteen percent (15%) of the sales made by Vanderlyn families will be donated to the school. Chick-fil-A is located at Perimeter Pointe next to Babies-R-Us. Don't miss this chance to spend an evening socializing with other Vanderlyn families while supporting the school!

Kindergarten Information

Please spread the word!  Vanderlyn will host an informational meeting for the parents of rising kindergarteners on Tuesday, February 4 at 6 p.m. in the Media Center.  Tell your friends and neighbors!
Vanderlyn Wins Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl
After a long morning of 6 rigorous rounds of competition at Tucker High School, Vanderlyn Elementary was tied for first place with Marbut Theme School. The two schools competed in a tie-breaking round and Vanderlyn won! Vanderlyn's team has advanced to the regional competition next Saturday, February 1, at Clayton State University in Morrow, GA.

Our winning team made up of fifth graders Molly F., Thomas F., Vishaal R., Tyler R., Renee U. and fourth graders Claire M., Shashwat B. and Haeyn S. This is a phenomenal achievement and shows our students' high performance level and dedication to reading. With the support of their dedicated coaches, they have read numerous books and have endured extensive practices to prepare for the big event. Our coaches are to be commended for providing our students with a high level of challenge and rigor that is sure to provide them with a lasting love of reading. The team is coached by Melinda Carroll, Gail Pansini and Sarah Turnbull.
DCPC Meeting - February 5
You are invited to attend the next meeting of the Dunwoody Chamblee Parent Council.  This month, the meeting will be held at Hightower Elementary on Wednesday, February 5.  The topic of discussion is Movement/Structured Exercise Initiative.  The DCPC meets monthly on the first Wednesday of the month (unless otherwise noted), starting with refreshments at 8:45 a.m. The meeting starts at 9:15 am. and ends by 10:30 a.m.
Summer Camp 2014

We regret any possible inconvenience this may cause, but hope that with advanced notice, you can plan accordingly.
