Recycling Viking News

The Recycling team has a new home! We are now part of the Citizenship Committee of the PTA. Our recycling programs are beneficial to our kids, who take pride in keeping our planet green, to our community, to our environment, and to our school because Vanderlyn receives money through some of the programs, as noted below.

We continue to encourage all Vanderlyn families to bring in the following items to the school, where we have collection bins available by the office:

  • Aluminum cans (rinsed clean)
  • Aluminum can poptops (collection will be donated by the Girl Scouts to the Ronald McDonald House, for their fundraising initiative)
  • Batteries (alkaline and lithium)
  • Cell phones (All types; Vanderlyn receives up to $100 each)
  • Digital Cameras (All types; Vanderlyn receives up to $100 each)
  • Empty Elmer's brand glue bottles and glue sticks (Vanderlyn receives 2 cents per item)
  • Plastic bottles
  • Plastic bottle caps (only types accepted are rigid caps that twist on with a threaded neck such as caps on shampoo, water, soda, milk, and other beverage bottles, flip top caps on tubes and food product bottles (such as ketchup and mayonnaise), laundry detergents and some jar lids such as peanut butter. Note: These types of caps do not get recycled during the bottle recycling process.)
  • Printer cartridges (All types; Vanderlyn receives up to $10 each)
  • Used crayons

Please contact Sandi Strasberg, Recycling Team Lead, for more information.

Reflections Contest

The Reflections Art Program, a nation-wide contest sponsored by the National PTA, has been rewarding students for artistic excellence for over 40 years!

As a reminder, it's time for all Vanderlyn students to think about submitting their entries for the Reflections Art Contest. Vanderlyn has no shortage of creative and talented students!  Students may express that creative talent in as many categories as they would like to-Visual Arts, Dance Choreography, Photography, Literature, Film Production and Music Composition.

This year's theme is "Believe, Dream, Inspire".  The deadline for entries is Friday, October 4 at a.m.  The Reflections Committee will be standing in the front hallway collecting entries that morning before school starts, so please bring all entries that day. Contact Louisa Boss or Camilyn Germann

with any questions.  Additional contest information, including mandatory entry form and packaging requirements, can be found on the Vanderlyn PTA website.

STEM Night - October 3

Please join the Vanderlyn community for STEM Night on October 3 in the cafeteria. The event will be drop-in between 4:30 from 6:30 p.m. Students will have the opportunity to compete in fun math games and activities, win prizes, and enjoy snacks and drinks. STEM teachers, STEM committee members and volunteers from Georgia Perimeter College will be present to facilitate games and activities for students of all ages/grades, and everyone is invited to attend.

(Parents must remain with their children as this is not a drop-off event.) We hope you attend this fun and enriching event! For more information, contact STEM co-chairs Jennifer Green and Ashok Narayan.

Science Olympiad
INFORMATION

Science Olympiad will be kicking off early this year to prepare for the Dekalb County competition hosted by Fernbank. Science Olympiad provides opportunities for students to engage in creative problem solving activities while applying their knowledge of the science performance standards. There are approximately 30 different science events that students prepare for competition in Spring 2014. The science events are an avenue to develop teamwork, to experience hands-on learning, to be curious, to be resourceful, and occasionally to be ingenious! The top winners continue to the state Competition in May.

TEAM SELECTION

The Science Olympiad is open to third, fourth and fifth grade students.  Any third, fourth and fifth grade student at Vanderlyn Elementary is eligible to try out for this year's Science Olympiad team provided they submit the signed permission slip (coming soon in the VIPs) to their homeroom teacher by Friday, September 27, 2013.  A team of 30 students and 3 alternates will be selected through a screening examination to be held on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 2:45 p.m.  Parents of students who qualify in the screening exam will be notified by the Science Olympiad Committee on or before October 18, 2013.

Please be on the lookout for more information on the Science Olympiad Practice times and County and State Contests included in the VIPs. Additional information on the Science Olympiad and its history may also be found at  http://www.soinc.org.

If you have any questions, please contact Kim Sims.

DCPC Meeting, October 2
The next Dunwoody Chamblee Parents' Council (DCPC) meeting is coming up on October 2 at Huntley Hills Elementary.  Refreshments at 8:45 AM, meeting starts at 9:15 and is over by 10:30.  Kathy Howe, the Deputy Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, will talk about Common Core Standards and Literacy.  The address for Huntley Hills Elementary is 2112 Seaman Circle, Chamblee, Georgia 30341.  Everyone is welcome!

Yearbook Committee Message
We had a wonderful time seeing all your children's beautiful smiles on picture day!  We are sorry to say that Lifetouch was unable to provide multiple backgrounds colors for the students on picture day as promised on the picture day flyer.  Everyone's picture was taken with a blue background.  We wanted to let you all know about the change, and Lifetouch apologizes for the inconvenience.  You will all have a chance to view your individual and class pictures before you purchase them.
Target Gives Back

null We have discovered an additional way you can support the Annual Fund without opening your wallet! Give With Target has launched their second annual campaign to support schools nationwide. Participation is incredibly easy: follow the Facebook link, cast your vote every 4 days, and as the votes increase, so will Target's financial support of Vanderlyn! It's super easy to vote on a smart phone, too! Spread the word to neighbors, grandparents, your students, etc. It's free money for our terrific school!

Track Club Meeting

An informational meeting will be held on September 23 from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m for all 4th and 5th grade students interested in finding out more about Track Club. The meeting will be held in the gym and students will be brought to the bus turnaround at 3:30 p.m. for pick up.

Shoe Drive
null
Vanderlyn Families, it's time to clean out your closets and gather all of your shoes to kick off our "shoe drive", benefitting the Dekalb International Center.  New students enroll everyday at the Center from across the globe.  The students and their families often arrive in Atlanta with only one bag, and minimal amounts of clothing and shoes.  All donations are accepted, and very much needed!  There will be a receptacle across from the front office for the shoes.

The Citizenship Committee will be accepting donations regularly throughout the school year.  Please consider helping the International students this year.

Thank you!
If you have any questions, please contact Suzanne Baisier.
