A Look Ahead

April

3         DCPC Meeting, Chestnut Elementary

4         First Grade "Circus!"

8-12    SPRING BREAK

Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

Spring is in the air and the kids are ready to play outside! Therefore, I want to remind you of a couple of things to help keep our precious cargo safe. We realize that the kids love to play on the school grounds after school, and we love to see them enjoying themselves after a long day of school. However, we need your assistance in helping enforce our school safety rules even after school is out.   While playing on the front lawn, please do not allow your small children to climb the trees. In addition, I strongly discourage older students from climbing the trees as limbs can break and they can get hurt. When playing on the lower playgrounds, please make sure that your children are supervised at all times, especially on the playground equipment. Also, be mindful of moving cars in both parking lots as teachers are leaving for the day. Again, we want our students to enjoy themselves after school hours, but we want them to always be safe whether in our care or not. Thank you in advance for your support of this special request regarding safety and supervision.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Crenshaw

Parents Needed For School Council

The Vanderlyn School Council is the advisory body to the principal. Members give advice and recommendations on matters that pertain to school attendance, academic achievement, capital improvement plans, curriculum, budget, and school/community strategies.  There are seven parents, three teachers, two business partners and the principal who serve on the council.

We will be holding elections for four parent representative vacancies on May 3, 2013. Parents serve a 2 year term.  The election process begins this week.  You will receive a call for nominations in the VIP on April 4, 2013. Nominations are due on April 18, 2013, by 6 p.m.  Any parent who has at least one child at Vanderlyn during the next two years may run.

Please consider nominating yourself or someone else to serve on the Council. Please contact Tina Wilkinson with any questions.

Helmets Off to Our VanderDash Winners!
Even though we did not get to physically run the race, we still have some special people to recognize as this year's VanderDash Winners!   Mrs. Bogis (2nd grade) and Mrs. Saltman (4th grade) tied for the Grand Champion in our month long Class Challenge.  Both classes reached 100% participation!  Ms. Bogis' class got to enjoy a pizza party catered by Jet's Pizza and Mrs. Saltman's class enjoyed frozen yogurt catered by Yogli Mogli.   Special thanks to our amazing sponsors for providing these wonderful prizes!

A big CONGRATULATIONS to our Grade Level winners:
Kindergarten - Mrs. Wylie
1st Grade - Mrs. Patrick
3rd Grade - Mrs. Weiss
5th Grade -  Mrs. Aho

All of the above mentioned classes received a ticket for a free piece of spirit wear and a special VanderDash beaded medallion.

Dash on over to ATLiving Realty!
The real estate team at ATLiving Realty was a proud sponsor of the 5th Annual VanderDash! We hope some of you were able to stop by their table on race morning for some face painting, free goodies and a chance to enter the guess the "hot tamale" contest.  We are excited to announce that Samantha Byers in Mrs. Saltman's 4th grade class guessed the exact number of hot tamales in the jar - 853!  Samantha will receive a gift card for a movie night for her family!  CONGRATS!

Special thanks to all of our VanderDash Sponsors, Volunteers and Participants who made the planning of this event possible!

Free Registration for Smart911

Smart911 is a free service that allows citizens across the U.S. to create a Safety Profile for their household that includes any information they want 9-1-1 to have in the event of an emergency. Then, when anyone in that household dials 9-1-1 from a phone associated with their Safety Profile, their profile is immediately displayed to the 9-1-1 call taker providing additional information that can be used to facilitate the proper response to the proper location. At a time when seconds count, being about to provide 9-1-1 with all details that could impact response the second an emergency call is placed could be the difference between life and death.  Follow the link https://www.smart911.com/ to get started!
