8-12    SPRING BREAK

Principal's Message

Dear Vanderlyn Families,

Spring is in the air! As always, Vanderlyn is full of happenings with never a dull moment. Our students have kicked off the season with exciting field trips to very cool places. So far, fifth graders had a blast at Blue Ridge and the Georgia Aquarium; Pre-K, kindergarten and first graders went to the Alliance Theater to see Charlotte's Web; second graders went to Stone Mountain and third graders went to the Tellus Museum. Vanderlyn students are on the go!

Math Night was a huge success! It was a fun and very academic experience. The students enjoyed math games, solved high-level and critical thinking problems and engaged in activities that promote STEM. We truly have the best and the brightest!

As we quickly approach Spring Break, I would like to inform you of some positive updates that you can expect to occur as we wind down our school year. Yes, it is unbelievable that only six weeks remain before we end the 2012-13 school year.

We are excited to offer our students an opportunity to culminate their learning and many accomplishments through our first annual Award's Day celebration. As the instructional leader, I have placed very high expectations on student learning. To show our students how much we value their accomplishments, it is appropriate that we end the year with a celebration to commemorate the hard work and commitment to excellence. Please mark your calendars accordingly as parents are invited to attend. All celebrations will be held in the cafeteria.

As I visit classrooms daily and survey learning, I am amazed by how much the students have learned. The growth that I have seen from August until now speaks to the relentless efforts of teachers who are dedicated, determined and committed to teaching and learning. The classrooms run like well-oiled machines as students demonstrate mastery of concepts and have perfected routines and classroom procedures. I am filled with pride and joy as I listen to such things as Pre-K and kindergarteners read, first and second graders sing math songs, and fourth and fifth graders perform high-level science experiments! As I go about the demanding routine of normal school operations, a hug or high-five from students can immediately melt my heart and erase the effects of a moment of stress. This is truly the BEST job ever!

Your Proud Principal,

Mrs. Crenshaw

Vanderlyn Special Guest

VanderDash Update
What does 5+10+60+75+600+1100+1=?

Another successfully planned Vanderlyn Elementary VanderDash 5k and 1mile fun run!

That's right, the 5th Annual VanderDash 5k and 1mile fun run! It takes 10 MONTHS to plan this AWESOME community event, 60 AMAZING sponsors,  75+ INCREDIBLE volunteers, 600+ emails sent while planning, over 1,100 registered participants of all ages, and 1 lightning storm.

There are few words we can say to describe the Vanderlyn VanderDash! Saturday started out as an incredible day filled with volunteers arriving at the school at 5:30 a.m.  We quickly worked together and set-up everything needed for the race. There we were ready for runners, walkers, teachers and school staff, volunteers, members of the community, our signature balloon arch, and amazing sponsors to arrive. Everyone was ready to have good healthy fun.

Than the rain came, so we quickly mobilized and moved everything indoors, still ready to run an awesome race in the rain...until the thunder and lightning came.  Unfortunately, in order to make sure everyone was safe, the race had to be cancelled.

While we didn't have a race today we had something super special. Everyone came together in the spirit of the race, an awesome community event, and worked together to pack up all the hard work as a team understanding that sometimes things are out of our control. We thank you for your continued support and participation.

We can't begin to thank the incredible group of volunteers who helped put this event together! It literally takes a village.  Hours and hours of behind the scenes work from planning, printing, scheduling, coordinating, calling, emailing, meeting, stuffing (bags and flyers that is), website development, Facebook (like us please!), marketing, PR, volunteering time, and coordinating thousands of little details!  The VanderDash would not be able to happen without our Volunteers and of course all of your participation!

Please visit www.vanderlynpta.com and our Facebook page to see all of our amazing sponsors, pictures from the morning and updates on future events.

Looking forward to a warm, bright and sunny 6th annual VanderDash next year!
