Co-Presidents' Message

My father was a military man. He loved organization and he operated with precision. I can still hear his voice in my head saying, "There are two ways to do things...the right way and the wrong way." Another oft-repeated saying was "measure twice and cut once."

Dad relished in checking the mailbox daily. We always left that task to him because it was understood how much he delighted in finding what was delivered. He would carry in the mail and fall back to his military training, calling "Mail Call!" if any pieces were addressed for someone besides him.

I have no enthusiasm for checking my mailbox. My mailbox is always filled with pieces of mail that are designed to meet another person's interests. I wonder how many Val-Paks I have tossed in recycling without even opening?

But when I check the PTA mailbox, I am my father's daughter. I can't wait to find what is in store because it typically contains beautiful, handwritten expressions of thanks (on stationery!!) from our teachers. The thanks are directed to the Vanderlyn PTA (not me) for the support we show our teachers. Teachers have written to express appreciation for the completion of the kindergarten fence, teacher stipends, holiday gifts, new American flags, Valentine's cookies and so much more.

There is tremendous value in saying "Thank you" and "Good job!". I encourage you and your students to share such sentiments with your teachers. Make the time to express your gratitude to our teachers who persevere in establishing a love of learning in our children.

Let's put the thrill back in "Mail Call"!

Have a great week!
