Principal's Message

Dear Parents,

I want to thank you for supporting our procedures in the morning for carpool drop-off. With your continued support and adherence of this process, we are able to move approximately 500 cars through the line in under 15 minutes. It is difficult, however, to get all of the traffic through at one time no matter what plan we put in place. We will continue with the current plan and ask that you arrive earlier for drop- off. If you are running late, please be patient and understand that safety comes first.

Traffic Pattern for 2012-2013 at Vanderlyn Elementary

  • There is ONE student drop off at Vanderlyn Elementary School. This will be on the Dunwoody High School side of the building at the western end of the building.
  • No left turns into the carpool lane from Vanderlyn Drive. This is a major issue that causes congestion entering and exiting the carpool lane.
  • Single file out of the carpool lane. You may turn right or left.
  • Please stay in the car and allow our staff to assist your students in the carpool lane.
  • PLEASE refrain from cell phone use in the carpool lane.
  • Please have students ready when you come to a stop along the sidewalk with backpacks and lunch boxes in hand to exit the vehicle.
  • Do NOT drop students in front of the school on Vanderlyn Drive or side streets. This is a very dangerous practice.
  • Do NOT park across from the school on Vanderlyn Drive as this is ILLEGAL and subject to traffic tickets. Please respect our neighbors.
  • At any time of the day, you MAY park on Vanderlyn Drive between the stop sign and the high school on the Vanderlyn side of the street to visit the school.
  • Buses ONLY in the western traffic circle (modular side).
  • NO PARKING on Trumbull Drive from Meadowlake Drive to Vanderlyn Drive - Pease keep this a safe walk zone. You are subject to ticketing in "no parking" zones.

THANK YOU FOR HELPING US TO KEEP OUR SCHOOL AND CHILDREN SAFE!

Safety First, Last and Always,

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Clair Wright Day was a huge success! With your help and support, we raised over $1,000 that will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation in honor of our former art teacher. The students eagerly purchased pink bracelets, some by the dozens! When we ran out, it warmed my heart that they still wished to donate their dollars. What better lesson to teach children than the beauty of giving? Thank you to everyone who supported this great cause. Please stop by our front lobby and view the masterpiece created in Clair's honor by Vanderlyn's own, Ms. Norman and Ms. McDowell.

Vanderlyn is a Drug-Free Learning Environment!

Red Ribbon Week was a huge success! Our students had a great time expressing all the ways they are drug-free. Thank you to our wonderful counselor, Mrs. DeRoux, for making this a memorable and educational week for our students.

Testing Update

The ITBS and CogAT standardized testing window is now closed. Our 1st, 3rd and 5th grade students did a fabulous job staying on task as always! You can expect to receive your child's test results by the beginning of the second semester.

Co-Presidents' Message
Dear Vanderlyn Parents and Volunteers,

The Georgia state legislature amended a state law this summer which deserves your attention. The new law identifies school volunteers as mandatory reporters of incidents of suspected child abuse.

In response to this law, the DeKalb County School District is requiring mandatory training of all volunteers that come into contact with students. This training empowers the volunteer by providing symptoms of abuse as well as procedures for making reports.

Completing the training has been made easy. Simply click this link to the Vanderlyn PTA webpage to access a very brief Power Point presentation. After viewing the presentation, provide your information that documents you have participated in the training. The presentation takes less than three (3) minutes to view.   Please be sure to complete the on-line verification form.

Be assured that all data provided in the certification will be respected and used for no purpose other than satisfying the mandatory reporting requirement.

Your volunteer efforts contribute to the successful environment at Vanderlyn Elementary! The PTA, school administration and teachers appreciate every volunteer that gives time to our students and school. Please don't be dissuaded by this requirement, and know that your efforts at our school enrich the experience for every child in the school house.

Thank you for your time and participation. Have a great week!

Julia LeDoyen and Courtney Kuriger

Dental Hygiene Month

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, and while you're keeping your mouth bright and clean, Vanderlyn will be collecting dental hygiene items to recycle.

Please bring in your old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes and caps, plastic toothbrush packaging and floss containers.

Vanderlyn will receive 2 cents for every item we collect and send in.  So let's do a great thing for the environment and for our school!  The collection bin will remain in the recycling corner in the main hallway near the office for the rest of the year so we can continue this great program!

For more information visit www.terracycle.net or contact Andrea Feinberg.

An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.
