Greetings from the yearbook committee,

If you still have your individual or group pictures please return them to your homeroom teacher.  Please send check, cash or money order payable to Lifetouch in the envelopes provided by Lifetouch for the pictures you have purchased or just return the pictures if you do not wish to purchase them. If you desire a retake of individual pictures, please write RETAKE under your child's name with a black marker on the front of the envelope. If you have already returned your photos, and desire a retake, please email Amy at amygaynor@msn.com with your child's name and homeroom teacher, and she will add them to our list. Math Olympiad
The Academic Competitions Committee is conducting the Math Tournament in 2012 - 2013 with considerable help from MOEMS (Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools).  MOEMS, a nonprofit corporation, provides opportunities for students to engage in creative problem solving activities while developing an ability to reason, to be logical, to be resourceful, and occasionally to be ingenious!

Our goals for the Math Olympiad participants include:
developing enthusiasm for problem solving and mathematics, deepening the understanding of mathematical concepts and
strengthen ability to use these concepts, considering concepts that they might not otherwise encounter, enriching experiences in intellectually stimulating and significant mental activities, and
building a stronger foundation for assessments and for future mathematics studies.

TEAM SELECTION
The Math Olympiad is open to fourth and fifth grade students.
All fourth and fifth grade students who have submitted the signed permission slip to their homeroom teacher by Friday, October 19, 2012 are eligible for the try outs. A team of 24 students, comprising of the top 12 fourth graders and top 12 fifth graders will be selected through a screening examination to be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at 3 p.m. in Ms. Lamback's classroom.
Only parents of students who qualify in the screening exam will be notified by the Academic Competitions Committee Chair, Mitra Saha on or before November 6, 2012.

Please be on the lookout for more information on the Math Olympiad Practice and Contest Dates included in the VIPs. Additional information on the Math Olympiad and its history may also be found at http://www.moems.org.

If you have any questions, please contacts Mitra Saha and the Academic Competitions Committee.

Coat Drive - October 22 -26

As you begin to go through your cold weather clothing, please consider donating any items that you no longer need.  The PTA will be hosting a coat and winter clothing drive from October 22 through 26.  All of the donations will be given to Hightower Elementary School students and their families, as well as The Dekalb International School students and their families. There will be collection bins across from the school office, in the main lobby during this collection period. If you have any questions, please contact Suzanne Baisier.

Thank you so much!

REFLECTIONS THEME SEARCH CONTEST

On behalf of the Vanderlyn PTA, we'd like to thank all Vanderlyn students who submitted entries in this year's Reflections Contest.  And now, for the first time ever, Vanderlyn students have the opportunity to participate in the Reflections Program Theme Search.  The grand prize winner will receive $100 and will have his or her winning theme presented at the National PTA Convention in Cincinnati next June.  This year's theme was "Magic of a Moment" and we invite students to come up with their own award-winning ideas for a theme.  More information can be found on the Vanderlyn website.

Deadline for entries is Friday, October 26 and entries can be submitted into the drop box marked "Reflections Theme Search" in the front hallway of the school.

Thanks and please contact Louisa Boss or Robin Murphy at with any questions.

Superintendent to Update DCSD Families
DCSD forums are still going on through the month of October.
These are open forums for all DeKalb County parents, and they replace the previous parent advisory committees. Parents are encouraged to submit their questions in advance to lillian_m_govus@fc.dekalb.k12.ga.us.

The meetings will take place from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 23 - Redan High
Thursday, Oct. 25 - Lithonia High
Monday, Oct. 29 - Dunwoody High
Dental Hygiene Month

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, and while you're keeping your mouth bright and clean, Vanderlyn will be collecting dental hygiene items to recycle.

Please bring in your old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste tubes and caps, plastic toothbrush packaging and floss containers.

Vanderlyn will receive 2 cents for every item we collect and send in.  So let's do a great thing for the environment and for our school!  The collection bin will remain in the recycling corner in the main hallway near the office for the rest of the year so we can continue this great program!

For more information visit www.terracycle.net or contact Andrea Feinberg.
