Author Talk: First Ladies of Running with Amby Burfoot
| Monday, July 25, 7:00 PM Main Program Room
Author Talk: First Ladies of Running with Amby Burfoot
Join us as marathon runner and editor Amby Burfoot reads from his recently released book "First Ladies of Running: 22 Inspiring Profiles Of The Rebels, Rule-Breakers, And Visionaries Who Changed The Sport Forever."
Today, millions of women and girls around the world enjoy running and entering races. It wasn't always so. "First Ladies of Running" tells the inspiring stories of the fiercely independent runners who refused to give up despite the cultural and sports barriers they faced. Legends such as Doris Brown, Francie Larrieu, Mary Decker, Jackie Hansen, Miki Gorman, and Grete Waitz are chronicled by Runner's World editor Amby Burfoot. Connecticut resident Amby Burfoot won the 1968 Boston Marathon, has been a Runner's World Magazine editor since 1978, and has completed 53 consecutive races at the Manchester (CT) Road Race, held every Thanksgiving Day. Author of a half-dozen running books, before joining Runner's World, he taught elementary school in Groton for five years, and spent a year in the Peace Corps in El Salvador, Central America. Please register.

Edwardian Fashion Costume Workshop
|
 Wednesday, July 27, 1:00 - 3:30 PM
Dayton Program Room
Edwardian Fashion Finishing Touches
The Edwardian era in fashion falls roughly between the mutton leg sleeves and bustles of the Victorian period and the stripped-down lines of the flapper. These are the fashion statements of the daughters on Downton Abbey and the victims and villainesses of Sherlock Holmes's London. If you love British period drama, join us as we create some of the distinctive accessories that characterize this style, from feather-bedecked fans and floppy Gibson Girl bows to scarves and headdresses. Get ready to dress up for our British fandoms cocktail party on August 12th with your own exclusive accessories! Pat Corrigan and our library staff will help you bring your creations to fruition.
This program is aimed at those who may be planning to attend the August 12th RidgeCon British fandom evening, but all are welcome to participate. Registration required.
