The Catcher in the Rye Read-a-thon
| Thursday, October 1, 3:00 - 5:00 PM Main Program Room Catcher in the Rye Read-a-thon
On Thursday, October 1st, the Library and Ridgefield High School are jointly hosting a read-a-thon of The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. This is being done in conjunction with Books Building Bridges, an intergenerational reading project modeled on some of the activities that have been part of past Big Reads.
The beginning-to-end reading out loud of Salinger's classic will begin at the high school at 9 AM with RHS principal Dr. Stacey Gross, continue throughout the school day with students and teachers reading, and then finish up at the Library from 3:00 PM until done (around 5 or so). We invite you to drop by the Main Program Room in the afternoon to listen or to read a few pages yourself. Readers are also welcome to visit the school during the day to participate. If you are interested in taking part as a reader either at the library or at the school, please contact Mary Rindfleisch at 203-438-2282 x11009 or mfrind@ridgefieldlibrary.org. |
Big Fire: Big School with Jack Sanders

Big Fire: Big School: An Illustrated Talk with Jack Sanders
The Great Fire of 1895 changed not only the face of the village, but probably also the quality of education of Ridgefield children. Historian and author Jack Sanders will touch on how Ridgefield children were taught in one-room schoolhouses for two centuries, and how the arrival of affluent "summer people" and the 1895 fire brought modern education to the town - even though no schools were destroyed in the big blaze. The talk, using more than 70 old images, celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Benjamin Franklin Grammar School, now commonly called "the old high school" or "Venus Office Building," on East Ridge. Please register.

|
Thursday, October 1, 7:00 PM
Main Program Room
Author Talk: The Narcissist You Know with Dr. Joseph Burgo
Clinical psychologist Dr. Joseph Burgo will share insights from his new book, The Narcissist You Know: Defending Yourself Against Extreme Narcissists in an All-About-Me Age. After highlighting how today's social media and selfie-obsessed culture fuel self-absorption, Dr. Burgo will discuss how unchecked narcissism can create conflict and lead to bullying, harassment and other interpersonal problems. Dr. Aaron Krasner from Silver Hill Hospital will be on hand to discuss the ins and outs of adolescent narcissism, helping parents to understand the narcissism that typically accompanies the adolescent years as well as signs that a teen is becoming too self-absorbed or impacted by the narcissism of peers. Liz Jorgensen, director and counselor at Insight Counseling in Ridgefield, will serve as moderator and offer tips for parents on how to help their children and teens cope effectively.
Joseph Burgo, PhD, is a respected clinical psychologist who has been practicing psychotherapy, including marriage and family counseling, for more than 30 years. He has contributed to The New York Times, The Atlantic and USA Today, and blogs frequently for Psychology Today. In addition, Dr. Bruno maintains a popular psychology website, afterpsychotherapy.com, and is the author of social psychology books The Hero as Narcissist and Why Do I Do That?: Psychological Defense Mechanisms and the Hidden Ways They Shape Our Lives.
Copies of The Narcissist You Know will be available for sale and signing after the event. This event is also co-sponsored by Books on the Common. Please register.
This event kicks off a new series of talks designed to help parents navigate the often-complicated waters of child-rearing Entitled Parenting the Selfie Generation: Raising Successful Adults, the series is a joint collaboration between Ridgefield Public Schools, the Ridgefield Council of PTAs, Project Resilience, Silver Hill Hospital and the Ridgefield Library.

Now celebrating its fifth year, the popular discovery, sharing, and storage tool is a social staple for consumers and brands alike. If you're interested in learning more about how you can use Pinterest for yourself and/or your company, Kate Fitzpatrick can show you how to do this in just fourteen minutes a day. In this hands-on, 60-minute presentation, Kate will walk you through the essentials of an optimized Pinterest profile, offering tips and suggestions you can implement immediately.
