Mark Schenker Lectures on Sloth
Thursday, August 13, 7:00 PM
Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, 258 Main Street, Ridgefield
"Give It a Rest" : A Brief Survey of the Literary Portrayal of Sloth with Dr. Mark Schenker
Mark Schenker, Dean of Academic Affairs in Yale College, will speak about depictions of Sloth in literature from Ancient Greece through the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Dean Schenker will touch upon examples in texts ranging from Homer's epics to Hamlet; from 19th-century English novels to the plays of Chekhov; from Melville's Bartleby (1853) and Goncharov's Oblomov (1859) to Waiting for Godot (1953) and Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces (1980).  Along the way, Dean Schenker's talk will consider the evolution of sloth from one of the Deadly Sins to a condition of the idle rich to a symptom of the modern age. Free. Please register.

This program is co-sponsored by the Ridgefield Library and the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum and is presented in conjunction with Sloth, The Aldrich's contribution to Seven Deadly Sins, the first programmatic collaboration by The Fairfield Westchester Museum Alliance.

Patrons under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
