Panel Discussion and Workshop: The Art of Historical Fiction
Join Nathaniel Rich, author of The Collector, a short story based loosely on the collecting life of Museum founder Larry Aldrich and commissioned for The Aldrich's 50th Anniversary; Joseph Kanon, author of Istanbul Passage; and Joanne Dobson, author of the recently released Kashmiri Shawl, for a discussion about the historical fiction genre, its varied interpretation by authors, and the challenges and opportunities faced when writing work in this motif. Discussion will be moderated by Library Assistant Director Mary Rindfleisch. Next, after a brief reception at which the authors will sign their books, Rich will lead a registration-required writing workshop. Presented in partnership with The Aldrich Contempoary Art Museum and Books on the Common.

Our mission is to offer writers in Fairfield and Westchester County a support forum that includes a general critique of works-in-progress, and the exchange of information and ideas on topics about writing. Established more than a decade ago, the Ridgefield Writers Guild is a time-honored organization of writers whose genres span literary fiction, essay, short and flash fiction, memoir, young adult, children's books and poetry. The Big Read
|  Ridgefield's Big Read of The Great Gatsby continues through November 23. Here are highlights of activities coming soon. See our Big Read page for more about these and upcoming events in this exciting community-wide project. Monday, November 3, 6:30 PM@ Ridgefield Library Intergenerational Book Chats: The Great Gatsby Ridgefield High School and the Friends of the Library are co-sponsoring two inter-generational "book chats". The first is on Monday, November 3 at 6:30 p.m., at the Library, and the second, which will be at RHS, is on Tuesday November 18. High School students will facilitate the small group chats, and the Friends will provide Gatsby-era snacks and (non-alcoholic) beverages. Please register.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with Arts Midwest. Support has also been received from Connecticut Humanities (CTH), a non-profit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities that funds, creates and collaborates on hundreds of cultural programs across Connecticut each year. This program is also made possible with support from Liz and Steven Goldstone. The 2014 Big Read in Ridgefield is presented by The Ridgefield Playhouse for Movies and the Performing Arts and the Ridgefield Library, along with numerous community partners.
