Author Talk: Michael Korda on Clouds of Glory

Bestselling author and esteemed historian Michael Korda will discuss his just released book Clouds of Glory, which gives a fresh, contemporary account of one of America's most admired and enigmatic historical figures: Robert E. Lee. Korda interweaves Lee's personal life and military career into a single, compelling story, painting a vivid and admiring portrait of Lee as a general and devoted family man.  Publishers Weekly refers to it as "the gold standard for Lee biographies." Copies of Clouds of Glory will be available for sale and signing at the event thanks to Books on the Common.  Please register

Nancy W. Stevenson, Art Director of Character Design at Sesame Workshop and Creative Consultant for the WITNESS Project International, will present a talk/screening that will focus on a massive, public space photography project in Guyana, SA in partnership with French urban artist JR. This project generated social awareness and change through the arts, and was followed by other creative public works that used writing, storytelling, and film. Nancy will walk us through some of these compelling projects and demonstrate ways in which public art can transform lives and communities. Big Read Kick-Off Event: Cab Calloway Orchestra

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with Arts Midwest. Support has also been received from Connecticut Humanities (CTH), a non-profit affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities that funds, creates and collaborates on hundreds of cultural programs across Connecticut each year.  This program is also made possible with support from Liz and Steven Goldstone.   The 2014 Big Read in Ridgefield is presented by The Ridgefield Playhouse for Movies and the Performing Arts and the Ridgefield Library, along with numerous community partners.

A few spaces are still available in Caldecott Kids for 1st and 2nd graders at 4:30 PM on Wednesdays, Baby & Me for newborns - 12 months at 11:15 AM on Wednesdays and Kinder Ready for ages 4 & 5 at 2:00 PM on Tuesdays and 10:00 AM on Wednesdays. Register on our website. Most classes begin this week.

Everyone who gets a new card or renews an existing one will be entered into drawings for tickets to several exciting shows coming up this fall at the Ridgefield Playhouse.  

Those who register for a new card are also eligible to receive a free copy of The Great Gatsby, our selected title for The Big Read taking place in October and November.
