A World Above the World with Daryl Hawk
This past April international documentary photographer Daryl Hawk embarked alone on his most recent expedition to the remote Northwest Frontier of Argentina. His route covered over 3000 miles across the high Andean altiplano plateau and over the spectacular 18,000 foot plus Andean mountain range where Argentina and Chile meet. While on the highest roads in the Americas, or "the road to the clouds", Hawk photographed and explored spectacular geological formations and canyons, high altitude lakes, indigenous cultures, pre-hispanic ruins, massive salt flats, geysers, the Atacama Desert and the highest active volcanoes in the world. Mr. Hawk will share his discoveries, stories, and important lessons from the nonstop adventures he experienced day to day. He will also discuss his style, philosophy, and various techniques he uses when photographing subject matter.

Author Talk: A Thousand Hills in Heaven with Josh Ruxin
Join us as Josh Ruxin, who grew up in Ridgefield, discusses his just released book A Thousand Hills to Heaven: Love, Hope, and a Restaurant in Rwanda [Little, Brown and Company; November 5, 2013] .
When newlyweds Josh and Alissa Ruxin first moved to Rwanda from Manhattan in 2006, they arrived full of ideas about what should be done. While Josh focused his efforts on health and development work in a village that was the epicenter of the genocide, Alissa took a different route, opening a gourmet restaurant overlooking Kigali, Heaven, as a sustainable, even profitable model of what can be done. While primarily a memoir of love, adventure, family and good food, A Thousand Hills in Heaven also provides an eye-opening view of how developing countries can lift themselves from poverty, and how Westerners can contribute to and nurture the independence necessary to achieve this.
