Frame of the Month
Antique Leather Book Cover
Framed Antique Leather Book Cover
Framed Antique Leather Book Cover

This hand-tooled leather book cover with brass corners and hinges is now preserved for posterity. The book cover is floated on a linen covered acid-free backing and held in place with formed  brass rods. The linen covered mat walls support the Museum Glass glazing. The rough textured frame accents the feel of the worn leather. Click on the picture to see a larger image and detail. Click HERE to see more examples of our work.
Restoration of the Month
A Family Portrait Restored
Digital Restoration Of The Month
Digital Restoration Of The Month
This Digital Photo Restoration customer lives outside California and had a special request. Not only did she want this badly damaged  3" x 4.5" photograph restored, she wanted it enlarged so the three women would fit comfortably inside a 9" x 15" antique oval frame. The restoration work needed was extensive but we scanned the photograph at a very high resolution to allow us to work on the piece successfully. Once the restoration was complete, we e-mailed the customer a low-res proof, showing how the figures would look inside the oval (white line).  Click HERE to learn more about Digital Photo Restoration.
"The Gloves Are Off"
Current Recommendations on the use of White Gloves from
 The National Archives
White Coton Gloves
Occasionally our customers will ask us if we wear white gloves to handle artwork. Unless we are handling certain types of antique photographs, metals, or early plastics, we generally rely on clean, dry hands to gently handle your art, because clean hands are often safer than white gloves. According to the British Library, and every conservator we work with, here's why: Wearing cotton gloves actually reduces manual dexterity, and increases the likelihood of causing damage. Gloves also have a tendency to transfer dirt to the object being handled and to dislodge pigments or inks from the surface of pages.
