The Tradition Continues
2013 Capital Campaign
Focusing attention on the
internal needs of our facility
david

Dear Friends,
Throughout our church's history, UUMC members have supported efforts to maintain and improve our facilities. In recent years, members joined together to successfully fund many improvements to our church's exteriors, including the roof, the exterior building appearance, and the courtyard. Our attention now turns to the three major internal needs of our physical plant that the church's Building Study Committee identified for improvements.

HVAC Systems:
Our HVAC (heating/ventilation/air conditioning) systems include 10 AHUs (air handlers), several water pumps and numerous control elements. Many of the AHUs are beyond their recommended life of service, including the two that service the Sanctuary and the two that service the first and second floors of Heinsohn Hall. A service outage in any of these areas would be extremely detrimental to the ministries of UUMC, namely our worship services and the Early Childhood Center. The funds you pledge to our Capital Campaign will help us replace those AHUs, upgrade our water pumps and install a new control system. The modern equipment will operate much more efficiently and will provide a high quality of service to the Sanctuary and first two floors of Heinsohn Hall for at least the next 20 years.

Restrooms:
There are a total of nine restrooms at UUMC. All of them are outdated and do not meet current building codes. All nine of these restrooms will be improved and/or renovated, and two new restrooms will be added next to the southwest corner of the Sanctuary. With the exception of the existing Sanctuary restroom, all of the restrooms will be brought up to current standards and meet ADA accessibility codes. Having modern, aesthetically pleasing and accessible restrooms will have a major positive effect upon the quality of our community life at UUMC.

Kitchen:
The third major component with a critical need for improvement is the kitchen in Heinsohn Hall. With a lot of helpful input and analysis from the Open Door team, the kitchen will be redesigned and brought up to city codes of operation. The improvements will provide a more efficient work space, and allow the Open Door ministry to utilize the Capital Area Food Bank.

Other planned improvements include renovating the "Green Room" on the northeast side of the Sanctuary and improving the pews in the worship space with repairs and new cushions.

The first phase of our long-range building improvement plan made the exterior appearance of UUMC much more inviting and welcoming to new visitors and members. This second phase of capital improvements will make our interior spaces more inviting for members and visitors to want to keep coming back.

Reaching out to UUMC members about the importance of pledging

Beg
inning this Sunday, we'll take a few moments during our worship services to listen to the ways that UUMC's ministries have touched and transformed the lives of others. On April 14, we'll hear from Rowland Cook, Diane Ireson and Geoff & Tiffany Kay, our Cauumcpital Campaign co-chairs, about how your pledges to financially support our building  improvements will help UUMC's ministries continue to thrive. During the next four weeks, you'll also hear perspectives from other members who will tell their own stories about why they are supporting the Capital Campaign -- including Gary Walker, Mark Jones and Margaret Berry. These talks will lead up to our Pledge Day on Sun. May 5. That's when UUMC members will bring their financial pledges to church in support of Phase Two of our building improvement project. UUMC Member Sally Drews

"As the Capital Campaign committee member responsible for coordinating the efforts for the Sunday School classes and the Homeroom groups, I have seen the response to this new phase of the campaign take off. It's gone from interest in just what this campaign phase involves, to questions about the various components of the budget, to outright enthusiasm for updated air conditioning and, especially, renovated restrooms.

Now it is time for each of us, as members of the body of the church, to ask, "How can I be a part of this effort? What can I do to be of service to the mission and work of this congregation by my gift to the campaign?"

We each can contribute in ways that are meaningful. Some gifts will be large, some small, but all who pledge will experience the joy of answering God's call to be of service to the community through the work of our church. The joy of participating in an effort that unites the entire congregation is available to all. Through your gift, you are continuing the work of all who have come before you and will make the way for future generations to continue that tradition."

We Need
Your Support

At University United Methodist Church, we have a long tradition of worshiping and growing together in the light of God's love. We offer an open door and compassionate heart to those in our community and world who are searching for a place where the truth is told and all are welcome.

To continue the UUMC tradition as a sanctuary and voice for God in the midst of a broken world, we must be ready to do our financial part to sustain our ministries.

Replacing our deteriorating HVAC system, building accessible restrooms and remodeling a kitchen that no longer meets city code are three improvements that now need your financial support.
