Your support helps UUMC continue to serve the homeless and hungry
Dear Friends,
It's always a busy Saturday morning at Open Door, UUMC's ministry to those who are hungry, homeless or in need. Volunteers scurry about the kitchen and Fellowship Hall as they prepare and serve a tasty and nutritious brunch meal for about 250 guests each week.
Renovations to the UUMC kitchen are among the projects that would receive funding through your support of our church's Capital Campaign.
What do we need in a kitchen? - Ease in preparing food and cleaning up.
- Storage places that make tools easy to locate and put away.
- Safety in the area.
- Sanitary surroundings.
A new kitchen would mean a safer, more sanitary and easier environment in which to prepare meals. Open Door uses large, heavy pots and pans in cooking, and these need to be kept in places that are easy to access so that volunteers aren't injured when they take out or put away these items. The floor needs to be as non-slip as possible. Hand-washing needs to be separate from food preparation. The ability to fill heavy mop buckets needs to be as safe as possible. In addition to safety and sanitation considerations, renovations would create a more satisfying and enjoyable volunteer experience. Also, meeting kitchen health code standards would enable Open Door to seek outside food resources, which would allow UUMC to budget less money for food to sustain this important m inistryThe Capital Campaign also would provide funding for bathroom improvements in Heinsohn Hall. Guests who come to eat the brunch we serve on Saturdays are frequently without available bathroom facilities -- a basic human need. What do we need for our restrooms? - Doors, toilets and lavatories that are easy to use by able-bodied and non-able-bodied people.
- Bathrooms that are easy to clean.
New bathrooms funded by your support of the Capital Campaign will improve our means to meet the capacity needs on Saturday mornings, and improve the ability to keep clean and sanitary facilities at UUMC.
Kitchen and bathroom renovations will help UUMC sustain our Open Door ministry for the future. Guests, Open Door volunteers and church members also will benefit from UUMC's improvements. These projects show our willingness to be a welcoming community of faith that offers Christian hospitality, concern and love to everyone in need.
