Preserve Our Church Home

Dear Friends:
Faced with opportunities to expand our careers, we moved to Austin a little more than five years ago. Shortly after settling, we began our search for a church community whose aspirations and energies could stretch our faith and whose ministries could provide meaningful avenues to put our faith into practice. After significant searching and prayerful contemplation, we found that home at the corner of 24th and Guadalupe.

As our lives grow ever more hectic with work and family obligations, our faith community -- and the sacred spaces in which we gather to worship, serve and engage with one another -- provides the centrality that we believe is so important to our lives.  At UUMC, we are nourished in many ways: through the majesty of music, the sometimes uncomfortable challenges presented from the pulpit, the ways in which we serve our brothers and sisters on Saturday mornings, and the opportunities we have here to expand our hearts and minds through Christian education.

As newer members of UUMC, we were not here when our church buildings were most recently renovated in 2008. We weren't here when the Saturday morning Open Door ministry began. Even so, we felt grateful for and indebted to the efforts of those who came before us in creating and preserving the sacred spaces in which we gather to grow in our faith.

As a result, we are enthusiastic about the opportunity to participate in a campaign focused on restoring and preserving our church home. Although the work planned for this phase of our Capital Campaign may not be readily apparent to those who drive or walk by, these improvement projects are no less critical to our ability to maintain a welcoming place for first-time visitors, life-long members, and many others who walk through our doors. We look forward, as a part of the UUMC family, to preserving our sacred spaces so that we may continue to provide a welcoming church home for all -- just as we found for here for ourselves five years ago.

Yours in Faith,
Tiffany & Geoffrey Kay

Second phase of improvements goes to members for approval
uumc

UUMC members will decide next Sunday whether to embark on the second of our three-phase capital improvement plan -- a long-range vision for the church that began in 2006. After the late service on Sun. Mar. 17, the congregation will vote on this next phase of our building project and the financial plan to pay for it. Our Phase Two improvements include a new HVAC system, bathroom and kitchen renovations, and other changes that together cost about $2.15 million. Click here for more information and details about these Phase Two projects.

Remember: Save the date of Sun. Mar. 17 to be a part of this historic moment in the history of UUMC.

Beth Kelley & Harry Swinney

"Harry and I are excited to support the new phase of the Capital Campaign to improve the physical structures of UUMC. There are two areas, in particular, where we look forward to seeing improvements.

During her last years, Harry's mother was in a wheelchair and she declined to attend services at UUMC because there was no bathroom she could easily access from the Sanctuary. The proposed improved bathroom accessibility off the Sanctuary will benefit both visitors and members.

Also, this past year during the Alternative Gift Market, I looked at the Fellowship Hall in terms of how we might make it more inviting to visitors. It was not a pretty picture. However, even though the currently proposed changes to the Fellowship Hall are minimal, they will make an enormous difference in its appearance. It will be nice to welcome people into our gathering place and be confident they will see how much we value them and ourselves."

We Need
Your Support

At University United Methodist Church, we have a long tradition of worshiping and growing together in the light of God's love. We offer an open door and compassionate heart to those in our community and world who are searching for a place where the truth is told and all are welcome.

To continue the UUMC tradition as a sanctuary and voice for God in the midst of a broken world, we must be ready to do our financial part to sustain our ministries.

Replacing our deteriorating HVAC system, building accessible restrooms and remodeling a kitchen that no longer meets city code are three improvements that now need your financial support.

We hope you will support The Tradition Continues 2013 Capital Campaign, which will help us make these and other vital improvements possible.

Watch for more information in the weeks ahead as we continue the UUMC tradition.
