The Tradition Continues

2013 Capital Campaign

Gratitude & Responsibility

Dear Friends:
As we reflect on the role of UUMC in this community, we are reminded of those stalwart Methodists who have sustained our rich history for 125 years. Over one hundred years ago, they took the courageous step to build and pay for the beautiful Sanctuary we still enjoy today. About 65 years ago, the same was done for Heinsohn Hall. Today, it is upon us to join our UUMC ancestors and do our part to preserve our church home.

In 2007, our congregation did an outstanding job of successfully completing the first phase of our Capital Campaign. It's time to kick off the next phase and not a moment too soon, according to our consultants. Members of the Church Council, Finance Committee, Board of Trustees and Building Committee have spent months working on details for the current phase, fine tuning the specific needs and weighing the inevitable tradeoffs. We believe the result of that effort addresses the tasks most needed while considering the wishes expressed by many of you for long overdue amenities and upgrades. We hope you'll agree.

The most urgent and costly need is a major overhaul of the HVAC system throughout the UUMC campus. Engineers have described our fifty year old system as "near collapse," saying that it could go out at any time. It is already requiring costly repairs on a regular basis. We also have other important and more visible items to improve the overall look of our church home and provide comforts and aesthetics now lacking. These include:
  • Updated bathrooms throughout, with two new bathrooms in the Sanctuary.
  • A shower on the 4th floor of Heinsohn Hall, an amenity much needed by our IHN guests.
  • An upgrade of the Fellowship Hall kitchen, bringing it up to code and smoothing the flow of the workplace.
  • New flooring and paint in Fellowship Hall.
  • New pew cushions throughout the Sanctuary.
We are thrilled with the plans to sustain the beauty of our church home -- and we're delighted to roll up our sleeves and pitch in on this effort. We hope you will be, too.

The responsibility of a long and rich heritage is now ours. Let's step up to it together.

Yours in Faith,
Diane Ireson and Rowland Cook

UUMC members prepare to vote
on second phase of improvements
uumc

Back in 2006, UUMC charted out a vision for a three-phase capital improvement plan to maintain and upgrade our facilities. This year, we are scheduled to begin Phase Two of this multi-year project. After the late service on Sun. March 17, UUMC members will vote on Phase Two of our building project and the financial plan to pay for it. The Phase Two improvements that members will vote upon include a new HVAC system, bathroom and kitchen renovations, and other changes that together cost about $2.15 million. Click here for more information and details about these Phase Two projects -- and please save the date of Sun. Mar. 17 to be a part of this historic moment in the history of UUMC.

"We're Keeping the Tradition!"

"We are reminded in several scriptures that we are stewards of God's earth which we have inherited. So we must maintain it, preserve it for another generation ... be responsible stewards. In the same vein, we must be responsible stewards of our property, beautiful buildings of history where generations have come together to learn, worship, demonstrate justice, mercy and grace.

We have inherited a beautiful and historic building in which generations have gathered to be the body of Christ at 24th and Guadalupe. Our educational building is in dire need of repairs to bring it into this century. We support this Capital Campaign and we hope that you will, too."

We Need
Your Support

At University United Methodist Church, we have a long tradition of worshiping and growing together in the light of God's love. We offer an open door and compassionate heart to those in our community and world who are searching for a place where the truth is told and all are welcome.

To continue the UUMC tradition as a sanctuary and voice for God in the midst of a broken world, we must be ready to do our financial part to sustain our ministries.

Replacing our deteriorating HVAC system, building accessible restrooms and remodeling a kitchen that no longer meets city code are three improvements that now need your financial support.

We hope you will support The Tradition Continues 2013 Capital Campaign, which will help us make these and other vital improvements possible.

Watch for more information in the weeks ahead as we continue the UUMC tradition.
