Greetings!

In March, we were honoured to host Team Canada's Meaghan Mikkelson as St. Albert welcomed the two time Olympic gold medal winner home. So many people came out to see this amazing Olympian and it was wonderful to see the time she took with each excited child as they lined up for autographs and pictures.

In April, we are looking forward to opening our doors for the St. Albert Spring Lifestyle Expo and Sale! This event takes over all three arenas and the two soccer field houses so please note that the south doors of Servus Place will be closed for the duration of the show.

In May, we are excited to welcome St. Albert's first Comic and Pop Culture Fest, the eeek! to the Northstar Hyundai Performance Arena. Dust off that storm trooper costume and tape up those Harry Potter glasses because there will be a costume contest and many more fun activities for everyone!

There is always something to do at Servus Place! I hope you and your family will plan to come and experience these great events.

St. Albert's Gold Medal Olympian Comes Home

Hockey fans lined up to give two-time Olympic gold medalist Meaghan Mikkelson (Reid) a warm welcome home to the city where she played minor hockey.

"Growing up playing minor hockey in St. Albert and throughout my entire career, I have always had such tremendous support from the city. I would not have achieved my goal of representing Canada at the Olympics without this support. I could not be more excited to come home and share the gold with the city I am so proud to call home!" says Ms. Mikkelson.

Meaghan delighted fans by signing autographs and taking pictures with young fans. Ella and Cole Diener, pictured above, were clearly thrilled to meet Mikkelson and have the chance to see her gold medals up close.

Mikkelson has a plaque on St. Albert's Hockey Wall of Fame which is located in the Northstar Hyundai Performance Arena and it is clearly deserved. She has a great deal of international hockey experience, playing in the IIHF Women's World Championship, the Four Nations Cup, and in the Olympic Games in Vancouver, where she also won a gold medal playing for Canada. At the 2011 World Championship she was named the best defenseman in the tournament.

"We are honoured to welcome Meaghan back to St. Albert," said Mayor Nolan Crouse. "This is a tremendous opportunity for all of her fans and hockey enthusiasts alike to help her celebrate her gold medal and an outstanding career."

A festival event to celebrate all things comic and pop culture.

From May 31-June 1, Servus Place is the place to be for enthusiasts of pop culture as the eek! Comic & Pop Culture Fest takes over the Northstar Hyundai Performance Arena.

Come dressed in your best costume and enjoy the Cosplay costume contest, panel discussions, live performances by Fable and more!

The event will be a showcase of comic books, science fiction/fantasy and film/television pop culture and related popular arts. It will also include other pop culture categories such as animation, anime, manga, toys, collectibles, video games, digital art education and novels.

If you love Superman, the Avengers, Star Wars, Lego, Star Trek, the Walking Dead, Dr. Who, Harry Potter, Batman or Dragon Ball Z, you won't want to miss this event!

The show will also feature many great exhibitors including comic-book dealers, collectibles merchants as well as the Creator's Corner (sponsored by GURU digital arts college) where comics and traditional pop culture artists will sign autographs and do sketches.

In addition, the Northern Alberta Users Group will be showcasing their Private Lego pop culture collections and Mural Mosaic and Night of Artists will present various interactive art opportunities and more.

Fun for all ages. Early bird tickets are available until April 15th online at www.theeek.com

Ask Bryce!

I see people using foam rollers a lot now. What is this for and how do I use one?

Foam rollers are used to release muscle tension and tightness. They allow you to target certain muscles and by using your body weight and applying pressure to that area.

Foam rolling is gaining in popularity because it is a great way to target problem spots. Popular areas to target include calves, hamstrings, quads, back, thighs and shoulders. One thing to keep in mind however, is that foam rolling hurts so you need to be careful about how much weight you put on certain areas and go gentle on those that hurt a lot.

Keep an eye out for our foam rolling workshops to get a great overview on technique or come to the fitness desk and ask for a few pointers from one of our fitness experts.

Lime-Coconut Cheesecake

This Sobeys recipe will wow your guests at Easter dinner!

Graham cracker crust with a twist: We've added shredded coconut for flakiness and cinnamon to bring out the lime flavour in the cheesecake.

Prep time 25 min  Total time 75 min  Makes 16 slices

Ingredients

Crust:

1 1/2 cups Graham Crumbs 375 mL

1/3 cup Medium Desiccated Unsweetened Coconut 75 mL

2 tbsp sugar 30 mL

1 tsp ground cinnamon 5 mL

1/3 cup unsalted butter, melted 75 mL

Filling:

3 pkgs Cream Cheese, room temperature 750 g

2/3 cup sugar 150 mL

1 tsp pure vanilla extract 5 mL

2 tbsp fresh lime zest, plus more for garnish 30 mL

2 tbsp fresh lime juice 30 mL

4 eggs, room temperature

1/2 cup sour cream, room temperature 125 mL

Toasted coconut for garnish

Directions

  1. Lightly grease a 9 in. (2.5 L) springform pan and line the bottom with a circle of parchment paper; set aside. Preheat oven to 350F (180C) and place a shallow pan of water on the bottom rack.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine graham crumbs, coconut, sugar and cinnamon; add melted butter and mix until evenly moistened. Press mixture firmly into the bottom of prepared pan; set aside.
  3. Using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese until very smooth. Add sugar, vanilla, lime zest and juice and beat well for 4 to 5 min. more. Add eggs one at a time; mix well and add sour cream.
  4. Pour filling over base and bake until just set, approximately 50 min. To help prevent cake from cracking, let cool in oven with heat off and door ajar. Cover carefully with plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm. To serve, release cheesecake from springform pan and slide off of parchment paper onto a serving platter; garnish with toasted coconut and lime zest and slice with a hot dry knife.
