March eNews
Greetings!

As we head into March, my mind shifts to Spring activities even though it is still so cold out! Maybe it's because at Servus Place, we've started our Spring programs and we're already taking registrations for Summer Camps. At any rate, I'm ready for the longer days and milder weather.

March has started cold but hopefully by the end of the month, we'll be packing away the parkas and replacing our winter boots with rain boots.

In the meantime, planning my family's spring and summer activities is keeping me going through the rest of this cold winter.

I hope you find something fun to do with your family this spring and summer and if you need a little inspiration, check out our Spring Break camps coming up at the end of the month and start planning to  keep your kids active this summer by registering them in one of our great summer camps

While you are at it, take a few moments to fill our our Customer Satisfaction Survey and  let us know how we're doing.

And don't forget to make a plan to keep yourself active too! An easy way is to download our app and (for Android and iPhoneand you'll always have an up to date copy of the drop in schedule with you.

Oilers Hockey School
The Edmonton Oilers Hockey School has been running at Servus Place for 7 years and every summer, hundreds of kids from all over Western Canada flock to our rinks to learn from the best!

Young players between the ages of 5 through 14 can register for Oilers Hockey School and the chance to experience high calibre training. Instructors include former NHL and WHL talent with special guest appearances from Edmonton Oilers and Edmonton Oil Kings players and coaches.

The Edmonton Oilers Hockey School is run through a partnership with the Okanagan Hockey School to provide leading edge, top quality hockey instruction in a positive and supportive environment.

Blaine Russell, Co-ordinator for both hockey schools, says Servus Place has been a great facility for them right from the start. "We survey the parents each year to get their feedback and they always say how happy they are with Servus Place. They like the food choices and the fact that they can take their other kids swimming while siblings are in the hockey school."

In fact, word of mouth testimonials from happy participants is driving up their registrations. "Kids from Manitoba to Vancouver Island come to this hockey camp and it's not just the chance to meet and skate with hockey players they look up to, it's also the fact that it's a well run program and part of that is because of the great facilities at Servus Place," says Blaine.

If this sounds like something your kids would like to participate in this summer, register your child today!

Source for Sports
Do what you love and you never work a day in your life. Dave Ridd may be the personification of this sentiment. The hockey dad is passionate about sports and he also happens to run two local sporting goods stores, Source for Sports.

With one location on St. Albert Trail and another in Servus Place, he is a seriously busy guy but that doesn't stop him from committing his time and energy to the sporting community he loves.

"Through the store, we sponsor local sports organizations like St. Albert Minor Hockey, the St. Albert Raiders and St. Albert Minor Baseball," remarks Dave. "And that's in addition to the numerous silent auction items we regularly donate to help local teams raise funds."

Dave's support of St. Albert's sporting community goes beyond providing financial support, he has also coached minor hockey for the last 15 years and has helped run the Excel Hockey Camps for the last 10 years.

So why would this busy dad commit to organizing another big event like the Road Rage Street Hockey Tournament? The answer is simple, it's because he loves the sport.

"When the hockey season ends, our kids still want to play so a group of local dads and I thought it would be fun to get a street hockey tournament together,"says Dave.

The other dads organizing the tournament are Geoff Giaccobbo, Rob Brown and Rob LeLacheur. This group turned out to be a great team as this inaugural street hockey tournament attracted 32 teams ranging in age from 7-16. This year's tournament promises to be equally successful. Taking place from May 24-25 at Servus Place, players can expect the same fun atmosphere with music, mascots and prizes for all the teams.

In the meantime, Dave is concentrating on providing his customers with the great service and product that Source for Sports is known for. Helping him at the Servus Place location is store manager Anita McDougall who has worked at Source for Sports for 15 years and managed the Servus Place location since it opened.

"I enjoy getting to know the regulars at Servus Place and building a relationship with them over the years,"she says. "We get to see kids coming back year after year to get new soccer cleats or skates sharpened and it's really wonderful to see!"

The Servus Place location is gearing up for summer with outdoor soccer gear, running shoes and ladies apparel. Stop by and say hi to Anita the next time you are in Servus Place!

Ask Bryce!

My son is just finishing up his first season of hockey and I'm wondering what is the right way to put away his gear for next year?

For some kids, summer hockey camps are right around the corner but for a lot of kids, it's time to put away the hockey pads and dust off the summer sports gear. Follow these tips to properly care for and pack away his gear:

Repair - Check all the equipment get it repaired before you pack it away because by next season, you may forget what needs repaired. St. Albert Source for Sports does repairs on hockey equipment.

Deodorize - Make sure your equipment doesn't get that winter stink! Wash all equipment in warm soapy water and let it dry completely. I know people who let the sun's rays dry and sanitize their equipment. And don't forget to clean your hockey bag. There's no point in packing clean equipment away in a stinky bag!

Storing - There are all sorts of good ways to store your hockey equipment. A corner of the garage, a shelf in the basement. Just be sure to keep it all in one spot so you're not chasing down elbow pads at the beginning of the hockey season next year!
