Fighting Back with Exercise

Multiple Sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system (brain/spinal cord/optic nerves) that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the body.

Many studies have shown exercise to be beneficial in managing symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS). Individuals with MS who exercise regularly have:

  • better cardiovascular fitness
  • improved strength
  • better bladder and bowel function
  • less fatigue and depression
  • improved cognition
  • increased participation in social activities

How Can AHYPT Help?
AHYPT therapists have 20+ years experience helping individuals with MS. Our knowledge of MS and its symptoms enables us to design personalized exercise programs that fit the varied capabilities and limitations of individuals with MS.

It is important to stay as mobile as possible without increasing MS symptoms. Common limitations our physical therapists can address for people with MS may include:
  • weakness and immobility
  • fatigue
  • poor balance and coordination
  • pain
  • vertigo and vestibular problems
These limitations can result in difficulty with everyday functional tasks like walking, driving a car, and your ability to participate in activities you love.

Exercise considerations for individuals with MS includes:

  •  medication effects on muscle tone and control
  •  heat intolerance
  •  high fatigue risk

Because MS is a progressive disease, seeing a physical therapist regularly for adjustments to your exercise program is beneficial. This will help you maintain the highest level of physical activity possible and enjoy the quality of your life.
