THE WAY TO A HEALTHIER YOU
May 2013
Greetings!

What are good body mechanics?

Body mechanics is the relationship between body position and movement. This relationship ensures the use of one's body to produce motion that is: safe, energy conserving, and efficient, allowing you to maintain balance and control.

Why are good body mechanics important ?

Using proper body mechanics allows your body to move  easier and more efficiently, thereby preventing injury.
When you apply good body mechanics to your everyday activities, you can achieve optimal physical function.

For example, good body mechanics may:

  • Protect your back from pain and injury
  • Prevent or correct problems with posture
  • Allow you to participate in an activity longer
  • Reduce the risk of muscle strains and sprains
  • Allow you to work more efficiently and effectively

Tips for keeping your body safe
  • Lifting: When lifting a heavy object, position your body directly in front of it to lift, and then carry it close to your body. Bend your knees so your legs, not your back, bear the weight. When carrying the item, use your feet to turn, instead of twisting your back.

  • Shoveling: Whether you're moving snow or mulch, shoveling is typically a repetitive action. Use a shovel with a shaft that is not too short (causing you to bend more to lift) or too long (making the weight at the end heavier). Keep your back straight while lifting and avoid twisting the spine while shoveling. To avoid next day fatigue, step in the direction you're moving instead of bending the back. Take frequent breaks to stand straight and walk.
  • Gardening: Rather than bending over to reach something low to the ground, support your back by bending at the knees. Keep one foot on the ground while kneeling. If you must kneel, use knee pads to absorb some of the pressure.

  • Office work: Office chairs and desks that are ergonomically incorrect in regard to height and size often encourage the "slouch" posture. When at your workstation, use an upright chair that has good back or lumbar support. Your computer monitor should be positioned so your head and shoulders are relaxed and you don't have to crane your neck. Also, keep your mouse close to your body. Hours of non-stop desk work can produce tension, so take a break, walk, and stretch!

  • Travel: During long drives or flights, stop every hour or so to stand up and move around. You can also place a rolled-up towel behind your back at approximately waist level to provide lumbar support while seated.

These are general recommendations.  To determine what is best for you contact us to schedule your free initial consultation.

How can a physical therapist help?

A Healthier You's physical therapists help prevent injuries before they occur.  Normal physical activities such as gardening or housework may seem harmless, but can result in injury due to abnormal movement, stress on joints and strain on muscles.

Because physical therapists are experts in how the body moves, they are able to design personalized treatment plans to reduce your risk of injury in everyday activities or sports.

Maintaining a regular physical fitness regimen can be very helpful in preventing injury to your lower back, neck, and shoulders. Participating regularly in an exercise program can also help strengthen and maintain the flexibility in your back, core, and leg muscles. This allows your body the ability to support good body mechanics.
