What causes Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is the second most common degenerative brain disorder, after Alzheimer's Disease. According to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, the causes of Parkinson's remain unknown. In some people, genetic factors may play a role; in others, illness, an environmental toxin or other event may contribute to PD.

There is a two to four percent risk for Parkinson's among people over age 60, compared with one to two percent in the general population. What is known is that there is a chemical or genetic trigger that starts the cell death process in the brain cells that produce dopamine, an important chemical in controlling movement.
What are the symptoms?

The symptoms of PD can be very mild at first. A common early symptom is a tremor in one hand, most often when at rest. Tremors can also occur in the legs or jaw. The tremors usually go away when moving and typically don't interfere substantially with daily function.

As the condition progresses, other symptoms may appear, such as shuffling or a reduced arm swing while walking, and handwriting trailing at the end of a sentence. Stiffness or rigidity may set in, as well as a lack of balance. Movements may become slower and a stooped posture may develop. It may also become difficult to speak loudly, or to show expression on the face.
How can a physical therapist help?

A Healthier You's physical therapists help those with PD to stay as active and independent as possible. The special exercises and techniques they use have been proven through research to combat the symptoms of PD by improving fitness levels, strength, and flexibility, while focusing on activities that are important to participants.

Studies have shown that those with PD who participated in an exercise program experienced improved walking, balance, strength, flexibility, and fitness. However, these studies also indicated that people with PD gradually lost the gains they had made when their supervised exercise program ended. It's important to work with a physical therapist to help develop good long-term exercise habits. Research has shown persons with PD who stay active and fit have less falls, are more independent, and can age in place safely.

A Healthier You offers wellness and prevention services to help you maintain gains achieved during skilled therapy.
