Seen in the Hallway
We may have said goodbye to our front lobby salmon this morning (they have been released into Piper's Creek), but there are still lots of "fishy" things in the hallways.

We've shared just a few photos here of salmon artistically created by middle school students, a salmon life cycle display created by Sally's class and Andy Warhol inspired Chinook Salmon from Bre's class.

We couldn't wish you a happy spring break without including this lovely photo of tulips blooming at the NW upper field garden raised from heroic efforts by Kim's 2nd grade class of budding landscape designers and horticulturists.

Acknowledgements
It takes countless volunteers to make the auction successful. Thank you to all who helped in ways big and small. Far more people donated their time and talents than we could possibly thank by name, but we want to highlight a few:

Diana Breaux and Erica Topel who co-chaired a fabulous auction that raised over $100,000 to support our school.

Kari VanSanford and Jacqueline Solorzano who used their artistic talents to make the venue stunning.

Ballard Masons (Occidental Lodge #72) who cooked and served the fabulous salmon.

Barb Jochum who worked behind the scenes to make the sign-up parties (and so many other things) great.

Angie Windus and Julia Kuskin who came to the auction specifically to provide data entry/check-out support.
May is Bike to School Month
May is just around the corner, and Salmon Bay's walk/bike committee has been hard at work putting together a great line up of events for Bike to School month.

Bike Swap
Have an old bike or need a new one? Salmon Bay is hosting a bike swap on Saturday, April 23rd from 10am-Noon. Bring any bikes you don't want any more, or come look for a new (to you) bike. Bikes are free! Unwanted bikes will be donated to Bikeworks Seattle.

Bike to School Day
Bike to School day is Wednesday, May 4th. Ride your bike to school and park in the alley where friendly greeters, treats and stickers will be waiting. After school we will have a Bike Dust Off. Get your bike ready for a month of riding. Fill the tires, check the brakes, wash it 'till it shines, and then give it a little something extra at the decoration station.

Fuel Free Fridays
We encourage you to be fuel free on all Fridays in May. Those who bike, walk or carpool should enter through the alley for recognition Friday May 6, 13, 20, and 27.

We need volunteers to make these events happen. To volunteer to help with any of these events, sign up here.

Beyond the Classroom
Xena's 4th graders just finished reading "A Long Walk to Water," which is a story about a boy caught in the war in Sudan, and a girl who spends every day walking to get water for her family. They decided to join Seattle's "Carry 5 Walk for Water."

Students will be walking a 5k carrying water to raise awareness for the billions of people in the world who do not have access to clean water. You can contribute to their team page or register to join the Salmon Bay 4th Graders team.
Auction Follow-Up
The Numbers
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our local business and school community, we raised just over $100,000 at last Saturday's auction.

If you didn't attend the auction but want to make a donation, please drop a check (payable to FOSB) off in the office by the end of April.

General contributions are most helpful, but you may designate your donation be used for the Tower Gardens or Playground Fund-a-Need (buddy bench, water fountain, maintenance).

A Word About Receipts
If you picked up a receipt from check-out on the night of the auction, that receipt was a work in progress and was likely missing things (e.g. fund-a-need contributions, class project contributions, party sign-ups). You will receive your final receipt shortly after Spring Break.

Missing
In the midst of check-out and clean up chaos, a few things went missing. If you accidentally went home with them, please return them to the Volunteer Coordinator's office:
  • White cake stand
  • $50 Macrina Bakery gift certificate
  • Walter's Scoop gift certificates
Class Project Accounting
If you went in on a group bid for a class project and attended the auction, your contribution will be billed to your credit card and should be reflected on your final receipt (coming soon). If you contributed but did not attend the auction, please drop a check for your portion off in the Volunteer Coordinator office.

There's Still Time to Party
If you missed them at the auction, the following parties still have spaces available:
Greetings From the Library
Library Numbers
We're three quarters of the way through the school year. We've circulated over 12,000 books and added over 300 new books (with many more on the way thanks to the book fair) so far this year.

March Reading Celebration
If you were in the building during March, you know that our month-long celebration of reading held a bit of something for everyone.
  • Under Xena's guidance, we sent our first ever Global Reading Challenge team downtown for the semi-finals (the team that won our region's semi-final went on to win the all-city final.)
  • Doorways and bulletin boards throughout the school were filled with interesting and fun visuals.
  • We held our first March Book Madness tournament (allowing our middle school students to submit weekly votes), which culminated in a championship round featuring Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian against Cinder, by Marissa Meyer and resulted in The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian being named Salmon Bay's first-ever March Book Madness champion!
Spring Book Fair
Kudos to Breean Kay and Deanna Meyerhoff for coordinating our spring book fair. Thank you to all students, parents and staff members who supported the book fair with your purchases. Our school received 25% of the proceeds which equals $1350 in credit for our library. Linda has already purchased over $600 in new resources which are being added to our collection and will be available for student check-out after spring break.

Attention 8th Graders
9th Grade Registration
The high schools each handle their own class selection and registration. Ballard will mail theirs out in early April. Ingraham will give it out when they visit us on April 29th (see below). For more information, check out your high school website.

High School Counselors Visit Salmon Bay
High School Counselors visit Salmon Bay on Friday, April 29 at 2:00-3:00PM. 8th grade students will meet in cohort groups with their counselors.

High School and Beyond Night at Whitman Middle School
Tuesday, May 10th at 7:00-8:30PM
Teaming with Whitman and Broadview-Thompson, this evening is for parents and 8th graders. Gain tips and insights into making high school an easy transition. There will be a shortened presentation of what Gail is presenting to students in their 8th grade ELA classes. Then, there will be a speaker discussing navigating the college admissions process and answering questions.

Library Records Follow You
Parents of 8th grade students should be aware that library borrowing records follow students to their (Seattle Public Schools) high school. This information will go out to students periodically this spring (via the daily bulletin), but it's always good for students to hear it from multiple sources! High schools will often require students to pay any outstanding fines before they are allowed to participate in co-curricular activities, which can be stressful for students and families. We never charge overdue fines, but we do charge for lost or damaged books. Please encourage your student to talk to Linda if they have questions about their library record.

Bulletin Submissions

We welcome submissions to our weekly Bulletin.
Email submissions to Jodi or Kristina by
noon on Thursdays.
