We love the colorful artwork that adorns our hallways. This week there is a pride of lions hanging out above Dave's third grade class lockers. 
 
 
  
 
This artwork is an homage to Leroy Neiman, who used generous quantities of color to bring energy to his art. The design elements students focused on were color and line.

Youth Suicide Prevention & Intervention Training
Did you know that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for Teens in Washington State? Youth Suicide Prevention Program (YSPP), Student Lives Always Matter (SLAM) and the Ballard Teen Health Clinic are partnering on a youth suicide prevention and intervention training for parents, family, caregivers and the community. Please join us in the Ballard high School library on Tuesday, November 17th from 7-8:30pm. RSVP

Youth Ambassadors Program: South America
Interested in a three-week leadership exchange to Brazil or Argentina and Chile? Teenagers ages 15-17 can apply for this program sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Apply by November 30th.

See Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Seattle Children's Theatre presents this musical, based on the MGM motion picture version of Ian Fleming's book. Opening November 6 and running through December 27. This marvelous, musical holiday event is appropriate for audiences ages 6 and up. Featuring Salmon Bay students Alexander Silva and Julian Mudge-Burns in the Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday cast! Tickets here.
 
 
Jazz Nutcracker Performance
Saturday, December 5th at 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 6th at 2pm. Performed by The Roosevelt High School Jazz Band, one of the few bands in the US to have the score for Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's 1960's take on Tchaikovksy's Nutcracker. Information and tickets here or call 206-201-1650.

Bryant Elementary will host their annual chess tournament for Grades K-6 on Saturday, December 5th. Register online here.
  
Seattle Vikings Rugby Club Open House
November 21, 10:30-12pm, Magnuson Park, Looking for a new sport? Try rugby! The Seattle Vikings Rugby Club, Seattle's largest club, runs youth rugby programs for 8-19 year old boys. The spring season runs February-May. No experience necessary. More info here or email with questions.

Book Fair @ UW Bookstore This Weekend
Come one, come all! Come support our school library! The Fall Book Fair starts today and runs through Monday. 25% of your purchases at UW Bookstore will benefit the Salmon Bay School library.

You can make purchases in the store or online, just be sure the cashier knows you are with Salmon Bay or that you enter the code SBS when checking out. Spread the word to friends and family.

Did you know you can rent gear for your whole family at Salmon Bay's rental night? You can! Come to the cafeteria Thursday, November 19th from 5-7pm to get your gear for the season.

Snoqualmie Pass provides Salmon Bay with rental gear scholarships for our Winter Enrichment Program based on the total amount of gear rented.They bring gear in all sizes, but if you need gear for a person in preschool, taller than 6'3", or with a shoe size larger than 13 please email Noah ahead of time to ensure they bring the gear you need.

Pancake Breakfast & Fair Trade Fair

Join us on Saturday, November 21st for breakfast and then shop at the alternative gift fair!

Soup For Teachers

November Meeting
Thank you to all who attended and participated in our meeting last night! Moving forward, we now have:

  • Approval to buy a motion picture umbrella license that will allow us to show community movies (first one scheduled for Dec 4th).

Night(s) With Your Legislators
Salmon Bay K-8 is in our state's 36th Legislative District. We are represented in the House by two capable, dedicated legislators: Reuven Carlyle and Gael Tarleton.  Both care enough about education, and about us, to spend an evening discussing current issues and answering our questions.

The Night With Your Legislators event is now two separate events:
  
Representative Tarleton is coming this Monday night, November 16th. We'll meet at 6:45 PM in the library for a short social, then sit down to talk about edcuation funding and other issues. Please join us! Coho Childcare is available.
   
Representative Carlyle is coming the first Monday night after Thanksgiving, November 30th. Please  save the date.

Elementary School News
Science Fair Support
We are looking for scientific and communications-minded volunteers to assist in supporting our 4th and 5th graders this year with their science fair projects as part of an After School Program.  If you are interested in donating a bit of your time this winter and are a scientist, engineer, or otherwise familiar with the Scientific Method OR if you make a mean poster, diagram or are a great communicator, please email Amy Paguirigan.

Photos Needed
In June, each of our elementary students will receive a yearbook with from the year. To create this yearbook, we need photos! If you have photos from the Halloween parade or a recent class project or trip, please email them to Jodi (or if you have a large number of photos, bring them to her office on a thumb drive to be downloaded). Thank you.
