Early Release Day Activity

 Need after school childcare for the early dismissal day on October 28th? Our After School Program Committee partnered with Space to Create, a local favorite for art classes, to bring their program to Salmon Bay on early release days! Next week's session runs from 1:15-4:30 on Wednesday, October 28th in the 2nd floor art room and is open to K-8 students. $30 per child (make check payable to "FOSB" and drop it off in the Volunteer Coordinator office). Musical Revue Class POSTPONED The musical revue class is postponed and will now start October 9th. That means you still have time to sign up! In this class 4th-8th grade students will act, sing and dance their way through some of the best scenes and musical numbers from American musical theatre! No previous experience required, but students must be comfortable singing, dancing and acting on their own in a classroom setting. For more information, click here.

Senate Education Committee Listening Tour A panel of Senators will be in Everett on Tuesday, October 6th from 5-6:30pm to hear from parents, teachers and taxpayers on how the State can meet its constitutional paramount duty to fully fund education. GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science) This is a free science enrichment program for 7th and 8th grade girls currently attending a Seattle public middle school. The goal of the program is to encourage girls to maintain and broaden their interest in STEM subjects by providing mentoring, hands-on activities, field
trips, and information pertaining to a variety of scientific fields. Applications for the 2015/16 school year are now open, and submissions are due by Monday, October 19th. Application materials and more information available HERE.
Grandparents Serving as Guardians Are you a grandparent raising your grandchild(ren)?Would you like to connect with other grandparents at Salmon Bay doing the same? If so, contact Gail Olson Laing, School Counselor.
Roosevelt High School Jazz Band On Thursday, October 29th, 2015, the top Roosevelt High School Jazz Band has the honor to play with the Seattle Symphony as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival. Purchase tickets and find more information here. Mindful Parenting Class Parenting with a Pound of Prevention and an Ounce of Cure will be presented on Monday, October 26 from 6:30 pm - 8:30pm.  Holy cow! If you're feeling like we're feeling, then September was a blur and you are just starting to adjust to the rhythm of the school year. We get it.
Thank you for all you did to make September successful at Salmon Bay. We know there was a flurry of activity in the first few weeks of school. We appreciate your participation and assistance.

If you plan to volunteer at Salmon Bay this year (and we hope you do), please join us for one of the volunteer training sessions we're offering this month. Morning Training: Tuesday, October 6th at 9am Evening Training: Thursday, October 15th at 6pm
The volunteer training will include:
- Basics: Signing in, using the copiers, finding the coffee and adult bathrooms, etc.
- Medical Responses: What to do if a student is bleeding or has an allergic reaction, asthma attack or seizure.
- Emergency Procedures: What to do when there is a lockdown, shelter in place or fire drill.
- Volunteer Rights and Responsibilities: What we ask of Salmon Bay volunteers and what we promise in return.
The intent of this training is to make sure Salmon Bay volunteers have the information, tools and support they need to feel confident working with our students. Please join us for one of the training times above. If you have questions about the training, email Kristina.

We are looking for individuals interested in being paid playground/lunchroom supervisors. If you are interested in helping two or three days a week, please email Neil.

Walk to School Day is Wednesday, October 7th. Beginning in 1997, this global event has grown to involve communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. Join the Salmon Bay community as we continue this tradition.
Pick up a "Walk n' Wheels" punch card in the front office, put your name on the back and keep track of the number of days you walk, ride or bus to school during October. Punch cards will be collected at the end of the month and we will have a drawing for prizes in early November.

6th Grade Camp Welcome back 6th graders! We've heard a bit about your adventures with orcas, racoons, deer and leeches but look forward to hearing even more about your camp experience.
7/8 Grade Camp The 7/8 teams leave for camp next week. If you have a student on the Cascade or Olympics team, keep your eye on your inbox for correspondence specific to your camp.

Yearbook Cover Contest Submit your entries by Monday, October 26th for the Middle School yearbook cover contest! Each entry must:
- Be 8.5x11"
- Say "Salmon Bay Middle School Yearbook 2015-16"
- Use black, white and ONE other color.
Submit your entry to Glyde (Room 306) with your name on a sticky note.

Welcome to PIE Coffee Hour
Stop by the cafeteria on Tuesday, October 13th from 8:40-9:40am for coffee and treats from PIE (Parent Information Exchange). This FOSB committee hosts speakers to talk with our community about topics such as parenting, education, technology, social justice, and similar topics of interest. Come review our list of possible speakers for winter and spring and give us your input.
Clothing Swap and Film Screening
Mark your calendars for Tuesday, November 3rd! PIE is hosting a clothing swap at 6pm followed by the documentary film "The True Cost" at 7pm. Bring gently used child and adult clothing and/or come score something new. This 90-minute film is about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the fashion industry has on our world. Watch the trailer HERE.
