Before & After School Programs |
Spring classes are beginning soon. If you are registered for a class you should have received a confirmation email detailing the start date and time as well as any important reminders.
Science on Wheels
We are still in need of additional registrations to meet our minimum for Science on Wheels. This class targeted towards 2-5th graders, focuses on Physics FUNdamentals. From hair raising static electricity, to solar ovens, to catapults, you'll experiment with Newton's Law of Motion, acceleration, electricity and simple machines. It's science with a sizzle when the focus is on physics. Class starts Wednesday April 22nd and runs through May 28th.

Spring Drama Classes
There are several drama class offerings this spring. Each class has an activity fee of $100.
- Mondays & Wednesdays: Playwriting Available to 4th/5th grade students
- Wednesdays: Theatre Tech Available to 4th - 8th grade students
- Thursdays: Monologue/Scene Study 6th-8th grade priority, then open to 4th/5th

Do You Have Game?
Roosevelt High School Girls Basketball Coaches and the returning Roughrider players invite girls entering 4th through 9th grade to join them at basketball camp this summer. Hoop camp runs Monday June 22 through Thursday June 25 from 9-3 each day. For more information click here.

Positive Parenting During the Teen Years
Join facilitator Anita Morales and other parents at FamilyWorks (1501 N 45th St) to learn about and discuss the challenges and gifts of raising a teen, working towards better understanding and communication, encouraging yourself and your teen, and building and maintaining trust. The class is free, but registration is required. Wednesdays April 22-May 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Please plan to attend all classes. To register call 206-694-6727.
April School Break/Summer Glass Adventure Kids are fascinated by glass and seldom are they given the opportunity to work directly with it. Join local glass artist/teacher/mom Marcia Wiley in her north Ballard studio learning about the magic of glass. Make a variety of fused glass pieces with dichroic, copper and glow in the dark glass, go on a special field trip, and have fun climbing the best climbing tree in Ballard. Ages 6-11. Classes offered April 13-17, from 9:30 - 3. Pick one or more days. Before and aftercare available. $97 includes glass materials, field trip, kiln time and snacks. $179 for two siblings. With the auction only a week away, there are countless volunteers working long hours. Thanks to all of you working hard behind the scenes to make this event a success. We couldn't do it without you. Onward!
If you are looking for an auction job, we've got 'em. We are in urgent need of three bid recorders to help during the live auction as well as raffle ticket sellers and folks willing to help with data entry/checkout at the end fo the night. If you are willing to help with any of these jobs, please email Kristina.
Garden Work Party
There is more work to be done in the garden. Please join us tomorrow from 10am - 2pm for a garden work party.
2-Liter Bottles Needed
The fourth graders need clear 2-liter bottles for science. They need to be rinsed out, but NOT washed with soap.
Picture Day
Next Tuesday, March 31st is elementary class picture day. There are no forms to fill out. Your enrichment fee covers your student getting a copy of the class photo. |

RSVP By Monday
Monday is the last day to buy auction tickets at the reduced rate. Drop your RSVP card and check off in the front office or RSVP online by Monday before the ticket prices go up. If the ticket price is a barrier to your participation in the auction, please contact Kristina about reduced price or complimentary tickets.

Jr. Thespians
Congratulations to Alexander Silva and Lydia Hayes - Salmon Bay finalists in the 2015 WA State Junior Thespians competition last weekend in Bellingham. Other Salmon Bay thespians included Gwen Schulz, Lila Zeichner, Justine DeVour, Delaney Lyden, Margo Frazier, Kai Gundlach and Zac Grynberg. Thanks to our parent chaperones who made this all possible. And thanks to all performers for doing a great job under pressure on a big stage. Bravo!
Finalist Lydia Hayes will be playing a Wickersham in Seussical Jr. The show runs April 17th- May 2nd at Village Theatre's 2nd Stage in a Everett.
All City Band Opportunity
All-City Band is a fantastic way to keep up on your instrument during the summer months and to make friends from all over town. The program is open to current 8th through 12th grade students and participants are eligible to earn their choice of Fine Arts Credit, Physical Fitness, Credit, or service learning hours. Tuition even includes an end of the season overnight trip to beautiful Penticton British Columbia. More information is available here.

The Elementary Science Fair will be held Tuesday, April 7th at 7:00 p.m. Fourth and fifth grade students are completing science experiments as part of their class work and their experiemnts will be on display that evening.
Kindergarten thru third grade students are welcome to participate as well! Individual student presentations can consist of poster reports, displays or models, demonstrations or hands on activities for the viewer. If you child would like to participate please email Jodi with any questions or complete the attached form.

FOSB's board of directors welcomes you to join the board as a director! Please get in touch with board secretary Mary Ullrich prior to our next board meeting, to be held Thursday, April 9, 7-9pm.
What do directors do?
- Receive training and orientation to get up to speed
- Act as trustees responsible for oversight, especially involving governance, fundraising, and finance
- Serve as a working member who attends preferably each meeting, typically held the 2nd Thursday of the month
- Attend the annual retreat scheduled for June 2015
- Commit to staying apprised of issues and discussions, providing consistency needed for fuller, richer participation
- Have voting privileges and contribute to the consensus process when issues come before the board
- Spend time with teachers and administrators each month
- Hear from FOSB's committees about their good work, ongoing concerns, and emerging needs
- Help solve important problems and offer solutions that serve our staff and students
- Meet new people and make new (and sometimes lifelong) friends
- Come to understand more about our school's practices and principles
- Demonstrate leadership and practice important skills like collaboration and teamwork
- Contribute your know-how and energy to a board that needs you
Time: 3-4 hours each month, including meetings
- Co-chair (must have a middle school student)
- Treasurer (must have an elementary student)
- Secretary
The board has asked its Board Development Committee to work on board composition, and they are currently studying the finer details around roles and job descriptions - more details will emerge as their work continues. |
