Middle School Play
This spring, the Salmon Bay Drama Committee is producing "Holes" by Louis Sachar, directed by Seattle-area theatre artist, Tara Kaine. "Holes" is a story about friendship, courage, standing up for what you believe in, and never giving up. Through this play we will meet and become some of the wildest and wackiest characters that have graced the Salmon Bay stage. All Salmon Bay Middle School students interested in being a part of the cast are encouraged to audition. To audition you must sign up for a slot through our sign up genius before March 15th. Auditions will be held from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. March 16 and 18. Callbacks will be March 20. Rehearsals will be held M, W, and F until the final two weeks of production, when actors may be called daily. Performances are May 28-30. There is a $100 student activity fee associated with this production.
For additional information about auditions (including monologues and sides and forms), please check out the Drama Website. For more information about this opportunity, please contact Drama Committee co-chairs, Lori Mudge or Nan Houston.
Spring Drama Classes
Theatre Tech Class for 4-8 Grade Students:
Salmon Bay students interested in deepening their understanding of and experience with theatre tech, including lighting, sound, and stage management are encouraged to sign up for this class taught by Michael Massey. Michael is a Stage Manager and Teaching Artist for technical theatre in the Seattle area. He has taught stage management and backstage courses with The Northwest School, Cornish, Seattle Children's Theatre, and UT Austin. Class will be held Wednesdays beginning April 1 and will culminate with running tech for the Middle School play, "Holes." There is a $100 student activity fee associated with this opportunity. Class size is limited to 10 students and will fill on a first registered, first served basis.
Monologue and Scene Study Class: Monologues can be the trickiest thing to master as an actor. Each monologue is a concise scene. Within 60 seconds, an actor must convey who they are talking to, what happened the moment before, and what their objective is. In this class, older students will explore objective, tactics, and how to make strong choices through comedic and tragic monologues. Once these skills are mastered, they will introduce another person into the equation. Through scene work, students will focus on listening and authentically reacting to what their partner is contributing to the scene. This class will give seasoned performers a chance to deepen their skills and newer performers a chance to become more comfortable developing a character and being in the moment. We have a limited number of slots available for this class. Registration is open to 6-8 Salmon Bay students at this time. On March 17 we will open the class to 4-5 grade students, space permitting. Spaces will be filled on a first registered, first serve basis.
This class will be held for eight weeks on Thursdays from 3:15 to 5:15 beginning April 2 and ending May 28. There will be a showcase presentation at the last class. Local theatre artist and director, Laura Knote, will teach this class. The student activity fee is $100.
Playwriting for 4-5 Grade Students:
Everybody has a story to tell. Sometimes these stories don't have the opportunity to be heard. Through acting exercises, we will explore different themes, characters, environments, and types of conflicts that are present in students' lives. Students will have the opportunity to write individual scenes with well-defined characters, an intriguing plot, and a conclusion that ties it all together. Using ideas from the group's work, we will work together to write a full length play that may be produced at Salmon Bay next winter by K-4 students. Laura Knote, will teach this course. Classes will be held after school, from 3:15 to 5:15 Mondays and Wednesdays for five weeks beginning April 27. Space for this class is limited to 14 students. Class will fill on a first-registered, first-served basis. There is a $100 student activity fee associated with this class.
