Faces of Salmon Bay

Please help us welcome our newest Salmon Bay staff member...

My name is Kerrie Bash and I am the new Elementary Access teacher at Salmon Bay. I couldn't be more thrilled! I moved to Vancouver, WA when I was five years old and have been enjoying the wonders of the Pacific Northwest ever since. I earned my Special and Elementary Education degree at Western Washington University in Bellingham. If you have never been there, I recommend it! I just completed my student teaching at Adams Elementary School this past December and am eager to dive right into a full time teaching position. If I'm not outside running, hiking, or doing yoga, you can find me inside reading, painting, or doing a crossword puzzle--all of which are accompanied by coffee. To reiterate, I am over the moon to join the Salmon Bay community, and if our paths cross expect a sturdy handshake and a friendly smile.

A Note From Your Volunteer Coordinators

A Look Back

We've been reflecting on all Salmon Bay volunteers did in 2014 and are overcome with gratitude. Salmon Bay volunteers donated more than 1,000 hours since the start of school. Volunteers brightened our hallways, taught our students, brought order to chaos, raised needed funds, spruced up our grounds, nurtured young thespians, and more. So many of the things that make Salmon Bay great are the result of volunteers donating time and talents behind the scenes. Next time you pick your kid up from an after school activity, pass a parent hanging art in the hallway, or see someone making copies, please take a moment to say thank you.

A Look Ahead

We have lots of great things ahead in 2015 but we need your help to make them happen.  Please consider how you may be able to help with the volunteer needs below:

  • WEP: Our middle school students will be heading out on their various WEP activities soon.  We still need five volunteers to help direct traffic on WEP mornings.  We also need one or two drivers to take PNW Explored students on their various hikes and bike rides.  If you can help with these needs, please contact Kristina.
  • TOURS: School tours start this month.  There are daytime (9am) tours on January 27th and February 11th and and an evening tour (6pm/7pm) on February 24th.  We need nine elementary and six middle school parent volunteers to guide guests and answer questions.  If you are willing to help with tours, please contact Jodi (elementary) or Kristina (middle school).
  • PAINTING: We want to make more progress on our school beautification efforts. We another dozen volunteers to join us on Saturday, January 31st from 8 am to noon as we paint middle school math classrooms and elementary classroom entrances. If you are available to attend, please email Jodi.
  • ORGANIZATION: Do you like bringing order to chaos? We are looking for two or three Type A people to help organize various spaces in our school. If you are willing to lend a hand with this task, please email Kristina
  • AUCTION: Auction planning is underway.  This is the biggest fundraiser of the year.  Check out the auction section below and consider how you can help.  There is a just-right sized job for you.

EventsGatheringsAuction

It's the Wild Wild (north)West!

Gather your posse, dust off your boots, mark your calendar and plan to join us to support and celebrate our community at our annual auction fundraiser on Saturday, April 4, 2015 at North Seattle Community College.

A note about our theme: Our Western theme was selected based upon suggestions from the community. If you've been to a Salmon Bay auction before you know that costumes are encouraged. So find your inner sheriff, outlaw, cowgirl or rodeo queen and join us.

A note about the date: Working within the availability of North Seattle Community College and avoiding a conflict with the Ballard High School auction, our auction date will be April 4th. We want to acknowledge that this date falls on Passover and is the night before Easter. We hope that many of you will be able to join us that evening. We also have many opportunities for auction involvement over the next couple months that we hope you will consider.

A note about procurement: Each year some of our most popular items are donated by you! We rely on our fantastic parent community and their employers, friends and family to offer a variety items at the auction. Please consider donating or helping us procure auction items. Auction donation forms will be available in the next week. Questions about procurement? Contact Nadege Mohr.

A note about volunteering: We have a right size job for you! There are many opportunities to support our auction. We are in particular need of help the day of the auction with transport, set-up, check-in, and clean-up. To volunteer or find out more auction info, contact our auction chair Stephanie Lynch or visit our Auction Bulletin Board located in the volunteer coordinators office.

Classes are offered Jan 19th, 30th  Feb 16th, 17th (during SPS School Break Days). Marcia Wiley is a working glass artist (wileyware.com) who leads glass classes for kids in her fused glass Ballard studio.

It's also a way for children to see a working glass studio and understand an artist's influences. Join us for a fun and educational day making a variety of sparkly and colorful glass pieces. We'll also go on a glass field trip. Ages 6-12 years. 9:30 am to 3 pm. Before/after care is available: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Terrific for siblings, friends and classmates. $97 per child, $179 for two siblings. Cost includes all materials, snacks and kiln time.  Add before/after care for $10/hour.
