Faces of Salmon Bay

Please welcome Melissa Hayes back to Salmon Bay! Melissa was our lunchroom manager last year, moved to another school this past fall, and is happy to be given an opportunity to return. Melissa has been a Salmon Bay parent since 2010. She has a 6th grade daughter who attends SB and a son who is now a 9th grader at Ballard High School. Melissa is originally from Northern California and has lived in Seattle for 8 years. Prior to that, she lived in England for 12 years with her English husband. These days Melissa mostly enjoys watching her daughter perform in musicals, reading novels and watching British comedy on the telly.

Seen in the Hallways

The weather is cold and students are dressing appropriately - with scarves and coats and hats. In related news, our lost and found is full of scarves and coats and hats.  Please take a stroll by and consider a New Year's Resolution of writing your student's name on EVERY winter weather accessory.

Our middle school students are gearing up for Macbeth and have put together a display to get you excited for the upcoming show (see showtimes in the column to your right).

Bulletin Submissions

We welcome submissions to our weekly Bulletin.
Email submissions to Jodi or Kristina by
noon on Thursdays.
A Note From Your Volunteer Coordinators

Happy New Year!  We hope you enjoyed your winter break and are rested and rejuvenated for the work ahead.

Fall Book Fair Earnings

In November we held our Fall Bookfair at the University Book Store. Thank you to everyone who participated and supported Salmon Bay. Together we raised over $1,500 which Linda, our school librarian, will use to purchase new books and resources.

Volunteer Opportunities

We have lots of exciting activities on the horizon and need lots of volunteers to make them possible.

  • WEP: Once snow comes to the mountains, our middle school students will be heading out on their various WEP activities.  We still need several morning volunteers to help direct traffic and drop off on WEP mornings.  We also need drivers to take the PNW Explored students on their various hikes and bike rides.  If you can help with these needs, please contact Kristina.
  • TOURS: School tours start this month.  There are daytime (9am) tours on January 27th and February 11th and and an evening tour (6pm/7pm) on February 24th.  We need elementary and middle school parent volunteers to guide tour guests around and answer their questions.  If you are willing to help with tours, please contact Jodi (elementary) or Kristina (middle school).
  • PAINTING: We want to use the time between semesters to make progress on our school beautification efforts.  Please join us on Saturday, January 31st from 8 am to noon as we paint middle school math classrooms and elementary classroom entrances. If you are available to attend, please email Jodi.

Willing to Lend Ski/Snowboard Equipment?

A Salmon Bay family is looking for ski or snowboard equipment to borrow for one time to mountain for 5th grader.  If you have gear you are willing to lend, please contact Melanie.

 Legislative Focus Day 2015
Based on its own testimony in the McCleary Decision, the amount with which the State of Washington should be funding Salmon Bay for the current school year is over $1,000,000 less than what it should be.

Absent our input, during the upcoming legislative session, state legislators will hear more about transportation and special interest tax breaks than they will about fixing education funding. We can and will change this. Start by emailing your legislators. Next, see democracy in action by joining other Salmon Bay families at Focus Day in Olympia on January 19th (MLK Day) and check out the Focus Day page on the new FOSB site's Legislative Committee page.  We hope to join with local PTAs to share a bus ride. For details, email Scott or Ian.
