Faces of Salmon Bay

Domingo Gomez, aka Mr. G, has worked at Salmon Bay for 14 years.  During his tenure, he has taught nearly 300 Salmon Bay students how to ride on two wheels and a significant number how to ride on one.  When away from school, you can find him running or wrestling.

Tim Lundquist, aka Mr. T, has worked at Salmon Bay for 16 years.  He loves his students and enjoys finding clever and creative ways to engage them in PE.  Away from work, he loves to backpack.  He is currently working on a non-fiction book proposal.

Mark Oesterle has been teaching music at Salmon Bay since 2005.  He believes Salmon Bay has some of the finest young musicians in the district and enjoys the opportunities to showcase their amazing talents!  Mark's favorite part of his job is being able to witness the students grow from 4th grade beginners, just getting to know their instruments for the first time, to superstar performers ready to take the leap into high school.  Outside of school, Mark enjoys playing clarinet with the Seattle Festival Orchestra, jamming with his friends, and exploring geometry and arithmetic.

Mary K. McNeill has been sharing music, movement, and stories as a teaching artist at Salmon Bay Elementary for about 16 years.  She also teaches at Thornton Creek Elementary and University Cooperative School and is a conductor for the Pacifica Children's Choir.  Some of you remember singing with her in the Seeds of Compassion Choir for the Dalai Lama in 2008, a choir that numbered 1,800 singers (800 of them children!).  Mary K also enjoys clogging with the Eclectic Cloggers.

Seen in the Hallways

Our community is gifted with many talented individuals. We are especially fortunate when those talents are shared with our students. This week we'd like to give you a glimpse of a couple art projects and highlight the volunteers who helped by sharing their time and talents.

Picasso Portraits

If you have walked past our second grade classrooms, you may have seen these beautiful portraits hanging above student lockers. Thank you to for Faye Baker for volunteering to teach students about Picasso and cubism. Faye encouraged students to look at faces in a new way (the way Picasso might have) and to work large. She shared, "We talked about contrasting colors and they had a blast mixing colors. Because kids just don't get a lot of opportunity to express themselves with gooey, yummy paint I didn't give them many restrictions for finishing the Picasso like portraits."  Please take a moment to look at the portraits as you walk down the hall!

Lino Block Printing

Middle school art students are currently involved in printing projects. Art teacher Barbara Leuty shared, "during our printing we've been able to utilize the safety boards that Jai Paguirigan made us last year (thank you!) and also invited guest printaking artist Doug Haker to visit our 6th grade class." Doug volunteered to share his knowledge and ideas along with some cool techniques.

EventsGatheringsRead All About It

As the weather chills and the days shorten, we hope the time you spend curled up with great books increases.  Linda, our Librarian, wants to remind the readers of Salmon Bay that you are never too old for picture books.  Picture books can (and should!) be enjoyed by readers of all ages.  Here are a few to get you started:

Wordless books are rich with opportunities for storytelling. Anyone (regardless of reading level) can craft a story to go along with the illustrations!

For some of us, there are just some experiences that invoke a need to find out more. Nonfiction to the rescue!

Do you have a special quilt or blanket? How about a favorite stuffy? If so, this is the book for you!

And, finally, a book that captures that child-like wonder we experience while we're waiting for that first big snowfall of the year:

Bulletin Submissions

We welcome submissions to our weekly Bulletin.

A Note From Your Volunteer Coordinators

Lantern Festival

Thanks to those who delivered candles.  We are all stocked up!  However, we still need volunteers to:

  • Help assemble lanterns (Dec. 15th - 18th)
  • Set-up tables/lanterns after school (Dec. 18th)
  • Light/monitor candles in the morning (Dec. 19th)

If you are able to help, please email Jodi.

Macbeth

Glyde & Co. are hard at work on preparations for Macbeth.  If you have one or more of the following to contribute, please contact Glyde:

  • White or light blue tux for Banquo's ghost
  • 8 golden goblets (could be brass or plastic)
  • A beautiful dark wig for Margo.
  • Scottish warrior style vests or leggings
  • Kilts and kilt pins

Ideas for making it snow on stage are also welcome.

Auction

We are so grateful to Stephanie Lynch and Nadege Mohr for stepping up to chair the event and procurement aspects of our school auction.  If you see these ladies in the hallway, be sure to give 'em a high five and a thank you.  They can't do it alone, so mark your calendars for the Auction Kick Off Meeting on January 8th.  We've got a just right job for you.

Wonderful Job Wonka Volunteers!

This is the perfect time to give a shout out to the many volunteers that helped make our current production of Willy Wonka possible. Countless hours went into all the preparations, rehearsals, costumes, crew support, etc. Whether prop making, concession baking, snack providing or supervising, each volunteer made a difference and we couldn't have done it without all of you.

Thank you!

A Note From The Front Office
Principal Chats

Thank you for your thoughtful questions and feedback at Wednesday's FOSB/Community Meeting.  We have placed a series of monthly Principal Chats on the calendar as this forum was well attended and people have asked for more opportunities to dialogue. Our next principal chat will be January 9th at 9:30 am following Friday Sing.

Principal Survey
If you have not yet responded to the principal survey, please do so by December 19th.  The survey responses will be shared with FOSB and BLT leadership in January as part of the overall process for making a determination on Neil's interim status.

Nurse's Corner

Snack Donations

Many students' ailments are helped with the aid of a healthy or filling snack. The health room is accepting donations of yogurt, fresh fruit, pretzels, and string cheese to help students get through the day when a tummy ache turns out to be hunger!

Lice Checks

Please continue to check your student's head weekly for signs of lice. This can be done with a  bright light and a comb, paying special attention to any hair near the nape of the neck and behind the ears. If you see something that looks like dandruff but is not easily removed from the hair shaft, that could be a nit (lice egg). If lice are found, please let the classroom teacher and school nurse know, and begin treatment on your student. If you are unsure, we can help you look.

Whooping Cough

Whooping cough has been prevalent on the north end this autumn. Please keep a close eye on kids with a persistent cough, and contact their healthcare provider to see if follow-up is needed.

Counselor's Corner

As educators, we realize the importance of your child's academic achievement and success. Many things impact student achievement, including: food choices, sleep, the environment in which they study, organization skills, and parent tracking of assignments and test dates. Attached to this bulletin are tips to help your student and family plan for success.

Elementary News

Elementary Yearbook News

Sherry Jaqua is starting to put the Elementary School yearbook together.  She wants one page of school portraits and one page of candid shots for each class.

Gathering the photos from our amazing, but busy families can be a challenge.  She needs help in two ways to make sure all children are well represented in our yearbook:

1.     A volunteer (or multiple) from each class to help get photos from events which include ALL children in the class.

2.     People to upload their photos for other events or clubs, outside of the classroom.

If you are interested in helping with the yearbook, please contact Sherry Jaqua (mom to Sophia in Brian's class)

sherry@foryourhealthnw.com OR 206-601-5627

Upload Photos for the Yearbook in 10 Easy Steps:

Note:  photos from a camera are best, but in many cases "phone" photos will work, the resolution must be 300 dpi, you can check your phone settings.

1.       Go to http://link.entourageyearbooks.com

2.       First register for a new login (if you are visiting Link for the first time) - this is quick and easy!

3.       Enter your Name, Email Address, Password and "Submit"

4.       Then your name will appear on the left side of the Link homepage in place of the word "Register"

5.       Search for your school by typing the first few letters of the school name until a dropdown list appears to give you the option to choose your school

6.       After the school is chosen from the dropdown list, click "Go To Your School's Link Homepage"

7.       Click on the "Upload Your Photos" button.

8.       Choose the category (i.e. name of your child's teacher) you want to upload photos to, click "select files" then browse on your computer for the photos, select one or more, and upload them.

9.       You can tag people in the photos or add captions at this point, then finalize the upload by clicking "update photo info."

10.

If you need to upload more photos, click the "upload more" button at the top to do so.

EventsGatheringsDirect Giving
Direct Giving
The thermometer is rising!  We have raised $33,895 toward our $40,000 goal.  Making a tax deductible donation is quick and easy.  You can donate online, by mail, or in person.

If your employer matches donations (we're looking at you Microsoft and Gates Foundation folks, among others), please remember to email Monica so that she knows you made a donation and she should follow up to claim the full benefit of your contribution for Salmon Bay.

Support Salmon Bay While You Shop

Did you know your winter shopping can benefit Salmon Bay? Virtually every store that offers a charitable give-back program will allow you to designate Salmon Bay as a recipient. For instance, if you shop at Target with a Target RedCard, they will give 1% of your credit card purchases to Salmon Bay. The Amazon Smile program gives .5% of your purchases to Salmon Bay. If you shop at stores that offer charitable give-back programs, please designate Friends of Salmon Bay as your recipient. And, as always, turn in your receipts from Ballard Market to ensure Salmon Bay receives 1% of the dollars you spend there.  Your November grocery shopping raised over $300 for Salmon Bay!
