Seen in the Hallways

As we get ready to wrap up "Faces of Salmon Bay," we want to introduce a new column which highlights some of the exciting artwork, projects and student learning occurring in our building.

If you had been in the art room this week, you might have caught a glimpse of these beautiful masks made by some of our 7th & 8th grade students. The students created plaster masks of their faces or hands and used acrylic paint to create an image that represented who they are. Here are just a few examples of their mask art:

A Note From Your Volunteer Coordinators

Lantern Festival Help Needed

We are seeking support for the daytime version of the lantern festival.  Volunteers are needed to:

  • Help assemble lanterns (Dec. 15th - 18th)
  • Set-up tables/lanterns after school (Dec. 18th)
  • Light/monitor candles in the morning (Dec. 19th)
  • Sort/distribute lanterns (Dec. 19th)

We also need approximately 300 tea lights to make our student's lanterns shine brightly. If you are able to help with these needs, please email Jodi. Tea lights can be dropped off in the Volunteer Coordinators offices.

A Note From The Front Office

Winter Break

A reminder that there is no school December 22nd through January 2nd.

Pedestrian Safety Construction

No doubt you've noticed the construction on 18th Avenue.  Thank you for your caution and cooperation with the traffic revisions and associated delays.  A reminder during this time of crowded parking on nearby streets to please be courteous to our neighbors and avoid blocking driveways.  This work is funded by Seattle's Safe Routes to School program. For more information, including a map of the project, please visit the project website.

Nurse's Corner

Happy December from the nurse's office!

Snack Donations

Many students' ailments are helped with the aid of a healthy or filling snack. The health room is accepting donations of yogurt, fresh fruit, pretzels, and string cheese to help students get through the day when a tummy ache turns out to be hunger!

Lice Checks

Please continue to check your student's head weekly for signs of lice. This can be done with a  bright light and a comb, paying special attention to any hair near the nape of the neck and behind the ears. If you see something that looks like dandruff but is not easily removed from the hair shaft, that could be a nit (lice egg). If lice are found, please let the classroom teacher and school nurse know, and begin treatment on your student. If you are unsure, we can help you look.

Whooping Cough

Whooping cough has been prevalent on the north end this autumn. Please keep a close eye on kids with a persistent cough, and contact their healthcare provider to see if follow-up is needed.

Support Salmon Bay While You Shop

Did you know your winter shopping can benefit Salmon Bay? Virtually every store that offers a charitable give-back program will allow you to designate Salmon Bay as a recipient. For instance, if you shop at Target with a Target RedCard, they will give 1% of your credit card purchases to Salmon Bay. The Amazon Smile program gives .5% of your purchases to Salmon Bay. If you shop at stores that offer charitable give-back programs, please designate Friends of Salmon Bay as your recipient. And, as always, turn in your receipts from Ballard Market to ensure Salmon Bay receives 1% of the dollars you spend there.  Your November grocery shopping raised over $300 for Salmon Bay!

December 10th FOSB Membership Meeting

Our monthly meeting date has changed to Wednesday, December 10th from 6:30-8:00 pm in the cafeteria.

We'll hear from Neil Gerrans, interim principal, about his vision for the work ahead and the results we're working towards, and there will be a good amount of time for your questions and comments.

We'll spend the last fifteen minutes hearing from those interested in the vacant role of FOSB co-chair. We'll learn a bit about their leadership style and experience, why they're interested in serving, and what their previous board experiences have been like, which will help the directors fill the open position when they meet in a special board meeting later this month.

We look forward to seeing you all there!

Questions or comments? Please email Robin Lofstrom, FOSB co-chair.
