This week we are introducing our school counselors.
Gail Olson-Laing wrote... I'm thrilled to be at Salmon Bay School! I've worked in education since 1996 as both a teacher and school counselor. The last few years I've been especially interested in learning about the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences, and find emerging brain research around trauma fascinating. I believe ALL children can learn at high levels-even if they do that in different ways. Being at Salmon Bay-where social/emotional learning is valued-is my dream job. I like that I'll be able to partner with parents and teachers to build resiliency skills in our children.
Outside of school my interests most often involve food--I've been cooking as long as I can remember. I also like gardening, canning, and entertaining. Whenever possible I also enjoy traveling, yoga/pilates, and most creative endeavors. My most recent interest is learning to quilt, however, my husband and I have a 4-year old son and a 6-year old daughter who keep us pretty busy. Although we're both transplants (I'm from Eastern Washington; he's Canadian), we live in Ballard and it feels like home.
Markos Weiss shared...
For over 25 years, I have provided educational and mental health services to children (K-12) and their families. I have a long history and interest in working with children and their families within Seattle Public Schools and community settings. I have worked in educational settings, universities, social service agencies and mental health facilities in direct service, supervisory, administrative and consultative roles and have maintained a private practice. I have specialized in working with families with special needs children.
This is my 3rd year working at Salmon Bay. Now, at 80% time, (not here on Fridays), I will be providing services to students, families and staff in 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th (last names beginning A - H) and the 7/8 Olympic team. Prior to SB, I worked as a full time counselor at Beacon Hill International School where my Spanish speaking skills were an asset.
When not focused on supporting students and families at work, I am passionate about being a stone sculptor, singing in groups with an emphasis on peace freedom and justice, exploring other countries and cultures, gardening, kayaking, cooking and spending as much time as possible with my two grandsons. I have two sons, one living in Denmark and the other living with his family near us in the south end of Seattle. My pleasure reading presently includes a focus on the poetry and writings of Rumi. This was inspired by my recent trip to Kona, Turkey.
