Faces of Salmon Bay
This week we asked our 2nd and 3rd grade teachers to introduce themselves.

Dave Middleton shared... Hi folks! This year I teach third grade. As many of you know, I am a musician and play music with a couple of buddies of mine on Friday nights. Along with Chris and Casey (my wife and daughter), this is my biggest joy. Though Friday sing is where you might see me strumming along on acoustic guitar with Mary K., I have to admit, I sold my soul to rock n' roll and my heart is in electric lead guitar (I can even sing lead and play drums a bit). My Gibson Les Paul Standard has become my #1 guitar over the last couple of years.  I've been playing guitar since I was 8. I have included a picture of me from 1977 just after I attended my very first Kiss concert.  One thing most people don't know is that I was once a cab driver on Martha's Vineyard!

Marilyn Fox writes...

This is my 3rd year at Salmon Bay.  What I continue to like about this school is the way teachers communicate and are dedicated to their work.  I also appreciate the way parents want to be involved.  My background involves years of teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade as well as Art, ELL and highly capable students. In my free time, I enjoy going to the movies, spending time with friends, being next to the ocean and traveling.  I use to be a professional photographer, so I also enjoy art walks and museums. What I am passionate about as an educator is taking students to levels in Math that are beyond what they believe they can do. I am also committed to helping students be their best self through social and emotional awareness and support.

Kim Post shared...

I am in love with teaching science to second graders!  To merge hands on activities, with math and writing while learning about scientific concepts makes for a very engaged classroom!  Yesterday our clay boats floated up to 69 metal washers before sinking!  I grew up mostly in Alaska,  living on a homestead and in villages. Life was all about hands on exploration as a child.  As an adult my experiences continue hands on learning, taking kayak trips through South East AK, floating the Yukon, dissecting whales, building furniture, teaching art, sculpture and design for over 12 year as well as raising two boys and now immersing myself in elementary education.  My challenge is integrating hands on multisensory activities in more of the academic setting with second graders.  Music, Art, Drama and Science is a powerful way to do this and second graders are loving it!

Bill Sweigert says...

I have my Masters in Teaching through IslandWood/UW and City University. This summer I completed and passed my Professional Teaching Portfolio. I've taught Environmental Ed through EarthCorps and Mountains to Sound Greenway, been a volunteer beach Naturalist on many Puget Sound beaches, and lead week long overnight backpacking trips for youth. My passion is conecting students to nature and inspiring scientific thought. I began teaching in classrooms at Discovery Montesorri School on Magnolia when my son Liam was born. It allowed me to work half days so I could savor being a dad for my first year. Then I accepted a job at KapKa. When Salmon Bay was hiring, I jumped at the chance to teach in a K-8, especially one with such a strong commitment to Physical Education and the environment. I am on the 2-3rd grade team and love teaching with the great staff and parents at Salmon Bay!

A Note From The Nurse

Please check your kid's head weekly for lice. I recommend making it a ritual.  For example, some families do a check during "Friday Night Movie Time." Although head lice are not a health hazard, they can certainly be a nuisance, and are best managed if caught early. Signs of lice include itchy scalp, sores or scratch marks on the head, and tiny white nits (which look like dandruff, but are stuck to the hair shaft). The most likely places to find signs of lice are behind the ears, at the nape of the neck, or anywhere a kid has been specifically scratching. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about identification or treatment.

Read All About It

Dear Jaxie,

My kid just asked me to read Fox in Socks again.

Do I have to?

Sincerely,

Tongue Twisted and Tired

Dear Triple T,

Yes, you have to!

Like a beloved stuffy, children fall in love with books and will often love the book until the binding breaks apart. Because these books are so familiar, they are often the first ones children learn to read on their own. The repetitive pattern helps develop a child's ear for language and is an important cornerstone in building the foundation for a literary life.

Hang in there!  Your child will be grown up before you know it!

Picture Retakes

You should have received your child's school picture by now.  If your darling wasn't as (ahem) darling as you'd hoped, mark your calendar for picture retake day next Thursday, November 13th. In order for students to do retakes, they must bring the intact packet of rejected pictures back on picture retake day.

It's Rainy Day Clothing Season

It is our desire to send students outside for recess whenever possible. You can help by making sure your student brings rainy day clothing to school each and every day.

Lost and Found

Our lost and found is overflowing. Please take a look this week and see if any of the items belong to you. Items will be laid out in the cafeteria Monday and Tuesday of conference week. ALL items will donated the Wednesday before Thanksgiving! You can help keep the lost and found small by labeling all your child's clothing to make it easy for us to return items to their rightful owner.

Holiday Assistance

Secret Garden Books is helping our community provide books to students in need this holiday season. If your family could benefit from this program and would like your child to receive a book this holiday season, please forward your child's name, age, classroom, and book interests to Michele Bacon or call Michele at 206.557.0290 by Monday, November 10th.

Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB)

FOSB Meeting Next Thursday, November 13th

Our agenda this month features our guest Jon Halfaker, who will share more information and details related to principal hiring/selection, in addition to welcoming our teachers Melanie Shelton, Brian Williamson, and Marian Wagner, who will share tidbits from the classroom and more. Thanks to our Assistant Principal, Darren Frink, we'll also have a nice icebreaker to help us get to know one another in lighter and more different ways, learn about our giving campaign, and hear from our legislative committee about the implications of this past election in terms of education funding. Finally, we will also try to wrap-up the donor vetting guidelines discussion, and more. Join us at 7:00 pm, either in the cafeteria or lunchroom.

Donor vetting guidelines -- background: Last year, FOSB endorsed accepting funds from other, larger merchants, contingent upon reviewing our fundraising principles. Out of that discussion arose an idea to propose guidelines as to whom we could/should/not accept donations from.Last month, the majority of members present showed concern that the proposed guidelines represent a minority viewpoint; in November, we will discuss whether guidelines (as a concept) are endorsed by FOSB's membership and directors. If so, then we will further explore the guidelines as proposed.

Join the board! November is the month to join the board, a process typically as easy as showing up and being voted in. Another chance will be in May. Connect with Mary Ullrich (maryullrich68@gmail.com) for more information.
