Faces of Salmon Bay
Our 7th & 8th grade students and staff are divided into two teams. This week we asked the Cascade Team homeroom teachers to introduce themselves.

Connie Gold shared...

I started teaching science when Salmon Bay was still NOMS!  That's a while ago.  Before I began my teaching career, I worked as an environmental consultant where, among other things, I got to spend a lot of time outside looking at streams.  I enjoy bringing my geology and hydrology experience into my 7th/8th grade science classes.  Being outdoor enthusiasts, my husband and I take every opportunity we can get out to hike, ski, and explore the great outdoors (good thing I have some time during the summer!). Salmon Bay has many special qualities and I LOVE teaching science, but the outside-the-walls activities such as WEP and camp are unique experiences here at Salmon Bay and are very special to me.

Hien Le says... I teach 8th grade math.  This is my 19th year at Salmon Bay. I enjoy working with staff, parents and students.  I also enjoy teaching math very much. I don't really have a lot to do outside of school besides spending time with my family and singing karaoke on weekends!

Sam Olson writes...  Samuel Olaf Olson was the name given to me by my parents and five older siblings as they wanted me to carry the name of my grandfather, Olaf Olson. I've been teaching 7th/8th grade Social Studies at Salmon Bay for the past ten years. I enjoy being a part of the Salmon Bay community; it aligns with my personal philosophy of "work hard, play hard." I believe authentically engaging my students in challenging classroom curriculum is enriched by the varied outdoor opportunities (e.g. WEP, Camp, Ultimate Frisbee) we do at Salmon Bay. I enjoy participating with my students and their families in these activities as I feel it truly builds a community.  When I'm not teaching you will find me playing Ultimate Frisbee, hiking, snowboarding, attending concerts, playing board games with friends and walking my dog.

Salmon Bay - WHAT! WHAT!

Ticely Reeves writes...

I am currently teaching

7/8 Language Arts (Reader's/Writer's Workshop). I came to Salmon Bay 6 years ago as a 6th grade LA/Social Studies teacher. This is my first year as a member of the 7th & 8th grade team. I enjoy the collaborative environment between students and staff in the classroom. I also particularly enjoy the Outdoor Education opportunities for students such as camp and WEP because they enhance community building and allow students to shine outside of the classroom. Outside of school, I like to travel, go to the movies, read and spend time with my family.

Middle School Athletics

Wear White This Weekend

Tragedy struck two Washington communities in the last week.  We have seen how Marysville-Pilchuck has been affected since last Friday, and earlier this week Anahlia Cowherd, a student from Aki Kurose Middle School, was killed in Seattle.  These events have impacted friends, classmates and the community with immeasurable grief.  It is with these two significant events in mind, that we ask all of you to join us this weekend in honoring the students that lost their lives.

The Seattle School District Athletics Department asks ALL FANS attending any Seattle school sporting event this weekend to wear something WHITE signifying HOPE and HEALING.

It is at times like these that we must come together to support one another, even if we aren't personally affected.  We express our thoughts and prayers by coming together as ONE and wearing WHITE as a symbol of hope for a better tomorrow.

Bulletin Submissions

We welcome submissions to our weekly Bulletin.
Email submissions to Jodi or Kristina by

Last Call

Monday is the last day to purchase a Chinook Book.  If you want one but haven't purchased one yet, please stopy by the Volunteer Coordinator office on Monday.

Kudos

Thank you to Laura Middleton for donating the small storage containers to the art room for our colored pencils and crayons. Special appreciation to Susan Reinhard for connecting the school with two fabulous (and free!) rolling costume racks.  And, finally, a great big dose of gratitude to the many parents who helped chaperone, corral costumes and donate snacks for the celebrations at school today.

A Note From The Front Office

It's Rainy Day Clothing Season

It is our desire to send students outside for recess whenever possible. You can help by making sure your student brings rainy day clothing to school each and every day.

Lost and Found

Our lost and found is overflowing. Please take a look this week and see if any of the items belong to you. Items will be bagged up soon and donated to charity.  You can help keep the lost and found small by labeling all your child's clothing to make it easy for us to return items to their rightful owner.

Holiday Assistance

Secret Garden Books is helping our community provide books to students this holiday season. If your student is receiving free or reduced lunch and you would like your child to receive a book this holiday season, please forward your child's name, age, classroom, and book interests to Michele Bacon or call Michele at 206.557.0290.

A Note From The Nurse

Please check your kid's head weekly for lice. I recommend making it a ritual.  For example, some families do a check during "Friday Night Movie Time." Although head lice are not a health hazard, they can certainly be a nuisance, and are best managed if caught early. Signs of lice include itchy scalp, sores or scratch marks on the head, and tiny white nits (which look like dandruff, but are stuck to the hair shaft). The most likely places to find signs of lice are behind the ears, at the nape of the neck, or anywhere a kid has been specifically scratching. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about identification or treatment.

Class Liaisons Needed

FOSB's Class Liaison Committee still needs first grade and Olympic Team parents to help build connections and improve communication between families and FOSB.  If you are willing to attend a couple of FOSB meetings this year and email a summary of key issues and topics of interest for your class/grade level, please email Hillary at [email protected]
