Our 7th & 8th grade students and staff are divided into two teams. This week we asked the Olympic Team homeroom teachers to introduce themselves.
Melanie Shelton shared...
I've been at Salmon Bay since the original middle school, New Options Middle School or NOMS, was founded in 1990. I currently teach a 7/8th grade homeroom, four science classes and a Spanish exploratory class. I enjoy the sense of community and strong relationships that are part of Salmon Bay as well as the emphasis on the whole child in learning. I value the 7/8th grouping that allows for a two year relationship with students and families.
Outside of school I am involved in a variety of activities around traditional music, including playing with a couple of Cajun bands, and working with organizations connected to Central America, such as Habitat for Humanity and Heifer International. I love reading, travel and hanging out with my dog Sophie.
Victoria Schurman writes... I teach Social Studies for 7/8th Grade (this year U.S. History and Washington State History) and Intro. Japanese and Culture. I've been teaching at Salmon Bay since 1998.
I attended Eckstein Middle School, Ingraham H.S. and the Seattle University Master's program. I was originally going to teach elementary, but love the Middle School for their quick wits, independence and hearts. I love the small community at Salmon Bay, where individuals are valued and supported by students, parents and staff alike. This community supports creative projects and curriculums and has dedicated parents and staff willing to go the extra mile.
Outside of school, I enjoy gardening, reading, and spending time with my family. Recently I became a "soccer mom" to my two children who both attend Salmon Bay (1st and 4th grade). I have two dogs and a bird that can say "Go Seahawk!"
Martin Piccoli says...
I arrived at Salmon Bay only a few months ago after 9 years teaching at Mercer Middle School in Beacon Hill, 7 years teaching in Columbus, Ohio, and 3 1/2 years teaching in Brooklyn. I teach reading and writing. I teach 7th and 8th graders--and they teach me! That might just be one of the most wonderful things about Salmon Bay: The relationships between the teachers and the students here are not as linear, not as unidirectional as they are in other places. There is community here, togetherness. We all belong. We all have something to offer.
Outside of Salmon Bay I do a lot of work related to school. In-between the grading and the email and the reading and the writing, I like to do a lot of reading and writing. I like to walk city streets in the rain and make up stories about people I pass. I like to cook, but only if I also intend to serve that meal to someone. I am a dog person, but lead a cat-person's life. I love the smell and feel and heft of a new book, and have been known to get lost for hours In Powell's in Portland. (But the truth is I am never lost there.) I come from a long line of starch & dairy lovers. I love every kind of macaroni and cheese from the "blue box" to fettuccini alfredo to Käse Spätzle. I love to stay up late, preferably with a movie, and sleep in as late as I can on Saturday mornings--the one day when the phone stays off. And I really appreciate that I was asked to write this, and that it will be shared with dozens, scores, hundreds of community members. There truly is togetherness here. I'm glad to be at Salmon Bay, glad to belong.
Connie Wood writes...
I teach 7th grade Math. I've been at Salmon Bay for 2 months (but have been teaching in Seattle since 1997). I'm actually a native of Seattle, living right next door to where I grew up.
I enjoy the energy at Salmon Bay, the warm feeling that one gets when one enters the building, conversing with students, staff and parents. I love the new paint and can't wait to see the completed project. Outside of school, I serve as Treasurer of the robotics team at Raisbeck Aviation HS and spend as much time outdoors in my garden, walking, skiing, kayaking and traveling as possible. |

Halloween Guidelines
As we approach Halloween we want to make sure our school is a safe and welcoming place for everyone. If your child chooses to dress-up in a costume on October 31st for the afternoon, please make sure the outfit is appropriate.
All costumes should adhere to school dress guidelines for modesty, messages, and safety. In addition please follow these guidelines:
- Costumes need to be non-violent in nature - violence is inappropriate at school and other children can be frightened by blood and gore representations. Weapons and toy weapons of anykind are not allowed.
- Avoid costumes that are dressing up as people from other cultures.
- For safety reasons please do not include masks as a part of costumes sent to school.
- Make-up, if used, should not be disguising the identity of the wearer e.g., whiskers and freckles, not face paint.
Most classrooms are planning to hold afternoon celebrations that day. The elementary school will be having a costume parade and the middle school will be having 3rd floor festivities planned by the Associated Student Body (ASB). Any food items being brought from home kitchens should be clearly labeled as home-made. Students with severe allergies need to be able to monitor or avoid allergenic foods.
SPS At-A-Glance Calendar
The district has updated its at-a-glance calendar with families in mind. When are the early release days? What days are kids out of school? Download the updated calendar here. |
