Faces of Salmon Bay
This week we are introducing staff who provide support in the lunchroom and at recess.

Beth Armitage wears several different hats at Salmon Bay. You'll find her in the lunch room and on the playground during afternoon recess. She also tutors, assists with the website and volunteers as FOSB Finance Committee Chair. When not at school, Beth enjoys spending time with her family, visiting local coffee shops and reading. She also loves travelling.

Tracy Pitcock is beginning her second year at Salmon Bay, making sure all kids, including her own second grade son, have a safe playground experience. When school's out, she enjoys urban adventures by bus, bike, or foot and hiking the amazing spots of the Northwest. She also loves watching football, rooting for the Seahawks, Huskies, and The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame (it's an obligation, being born and raised in South Bend, IN).

Rebecca King is the Lunchroon manager.

You'll find Rebecca at Salmon Bay from 7:30 am to 8:40 am serving breakfast. She returns from 10:50 am - 2:00 p.m. for lunch. Please feel free to stop by the lunch room if you have questions or to make a payment on your student's account. Rebecca and her husband are avid sports fans and attend a variety of games. Rebecca is also related to Martin Luther King, Jr. He was her husband's great great uncle.

A Note From Your Volunteer Coordinators
Thank You to Our Painting Party Volunteers!

This past Saturday we had a fantastic group of people come together for a Salmon Bay Painting Party to make our school more cheerful, brighter and colorful. A few staff members were joined by old and new parents to Salmon Bay, as well as Seattle Works' Team BBC. Principal Neil and Asst. Principal Darren were on top of things, laying out the drop cloths for the paint station and setting volunteers up with rollers and paint. Music was blasting on the third floor and a smorgasbord was waiting in the Volunteer Coordinators' office. Volunteers left tired but fulfilled. We'd like to thank them now.

Special thanks goes to: Tracy Wilson, a new parent to Salmon Bay, for sizing up the preparation work and supply needs for the Paint Party; Jodi Russell, for ensuring that the volunteer team was well taken cared of and for doing a great job of publicizing this project; Olivia Dalesandro, for picking up those 15 gallons of paint and for contributing vastly to the smorgasbord; Caitlin Racey, for being a benefactor of this cause; and Darren and Neil, for seeing this beautification effort through from inception to the very end.

Thank you to all these individuals who lent their time and hands to Salmon Bay this weekend: Suzanne Waller; Emily Howerter; Doug & Helene Haker; Aleen Adams; Terri Cole; Chris Ragsdale; John Dovey; Scott Koch; Christie West; Luc Rainville; Matt Seto; Iris & Tom Hogan-Schmidt; Robin Lofstrom; Praise Fordham; Anna Hurst; Tyler Reed; Natraj Jaganmohan; Chris Blair; Chantel & Dannon Allbee; Justin Mak; & Cate Blair and Kyle Hatridge, Team BBC captains.

Lastly, a huge thank you to Mindy Terence for all of her work coordinating and organizing our volunteers. Mindy has been working to plan and support these beautification efforts since August. Her efforts, energy and enthusiam played a key role in making this a success!

We're tentatively planning a second, minor Paint Party in the next month to finish painting some areas. Look for more details soon!

Kudos to Top Banana

Thank you to Top Banana for their generous donation of fresh produce to our middle school camps. The next time you are passing by, say hello and thanks for supporting Salmon Bay!

A Note From The Front Office

Halloween Guidelines

As we approach Halloween we want to make sure our school is a safe and welcoming place for everyone.  If your child chooses to dress-up in a costume on October 31st for the afternoon, please make sure the outfit is appropriate.

All costumes should adhere to school dress guidelines for modesty, messages, and safety.  In addition please follow these guidelines:

  •  Costumes need to be non-violent in nature - violence is inappropriate at school and other children can be frightened by blood and gore representations. Weapons and toy weapons of anykind are not allowed.
  • Avoid costumes that are dressing up as people from other cultures.
  • For safety reasons please do not include masks as a part of costumes sent to school.
  • Make-up, if used, should not be disguising the identity of the wearer e.g., whiskers and freckles, not face paint.

Most classrooms are planning to hold afternoon celebrations that day.  The elementary school will be having a costume parade and the middle school will be having 3rd floor festivities planned by the Associated Student Body (ASB).  Any food items being brought from home kitchens should be clearly labeled as home-made.  Students with severe allergies need to be able to monitor or avoid allergenic foods.

Curriculum Night
If you have feedback about Curriculum Night, please complete this brief survey or contact Darren or Neil.

Weekend Food Assistance

Salmon Bay and the Ballard Food Bank are working together to provide weekend meals and snacks for Salmon Bay families throughout the school year.  Food is distributed discreetly each Friday. To sign up for assistance, please contact Kristina or Markos.

  • A camp lantern made by GE that uses "D" cell batteries; it has a tape marking on it for Tent Grp 12 (it's a very nice one!)
  • A pair of size 10 Coleman light weight hiking boots that are grayish brown with some purple in them
  • A two piece foldup camp chair in a black cover sack

If any of these are yours, they are currently sitting outside Connie Gold's room (315) on the 3rd floor.

This year, on Halloween, the middle school will celebrate with a "block party" on the third floor from 1:30 - 3pm.  Students will move between a variety of activities (e.g. dancing, movie viewing, game playing, etc.).  If you are available to chaperone or able to donate snacks and refreshments, please contact Kristina.  We are in need of:
