Faces of Salmon Bay
This week we would like to introduce you to members of our Elementary Special Education Team. This team works closely with members of the general education staff to provide the most successful experience possible for all of our students.

Christine Palmer recently moved back to the Seattle area to be closer to her children.  She is excited to be at Salmon Bay and to once again be teaching in a K-8 school!  Currently, Christine is the Resource Room teacher supporting students in their general education classes as well as leading small groups in the Resource Room (127).

Cody Bean leads the Access Program at Salmon Bay K-8. He is passionate about providing pathways for students with special needs to experience academics and community in deep and meaningful ways. Cody's hobbies are mostly athletics related; triathlon, basketball, ultimate frisbee, and hiking. He lives in Ballard with his wife and kids. You might spot him at a nearby park or store with his two children who are eight and five years old.

Karen Herring is a Special Education Assistant working with grades K-5. She is from Maine, but has lived and travelled all over the country. She has 2 cats, Frankie and Casper. She lives with those two rescue kitties and her husband at Alki Beach.

Leslie Noson has been an instructional aide for 4 years at Salmon Bay. She especially loves to teach math! Leslie has been involved with Seattle Public Schools since 1980 as a parent, classroom teacher at Olympic View Elementary, substitute teacher and currently as an aide. Leslie has a blended family of 4 "kids" who are all grown up and married. She also has four grandchildren so far.  She grew up in the area and has a large extended family here. When not at school, Leslie loves playing with her grandkids, cooking, reading, gardening and traveling.

Jim Hamerlinck is in his first year as an Instructional Assistant at Salmon Bay after working the past nine years at North Beach Elementary in Ballard. Jim is also an actor and likes to bike and take photographs in his spare time.

Melissa Robinson is a Special Education Instructional Assistant.  She has a 4th grader at Salmon Bay.  She has a house full of animals: 2 cats; 1 lizard; 1 hampster; 2 fish; and a prairie dog coming in May.  When not at school, she enjoys watching movies.

Matt Shaffer is currently a Special Education Instructional Assistant. He has specifically been supporting Xena's and Nicolette's classes, although he helps out wherever he is needed. He often can be found on the playground or in the lunchroom. When not at school, Matt likes to hike. He also plays and enjoys watching soccer.  Matt moved to Ballard at the beginning of October so you may see him at the farmers market on Sundays.

Curriculum Night

We were glad to see so many of you at Curriculum Night this week!  We had a chance to connect and hear feedback from many of you, but wanted to invite your reflections on the evening as we debrief and plan for future events.  If you have feedback for us, please complete this brief survey or contact Darren or Neil.

Weekend Food

Salmon Bay and the Ballard Food Bank are working together to provide weekend meals for students who are in need throughout the school year.  We provide 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 3 dinners, and snacks to students in need.  Food is distributed discreetly to students on Fridays for the weekend and can accommodate vegetarian and other dietary requests. Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB)
Next Meeting

FOSB's monthly meeting is next Thursday, October 16th from 7-9 pm, in the school library. Our agenda (attached to this Bulletin) represents months of work by volunteers, who thoughtfully planned ahead and provided information and handouts for you to read carefully. Please connect with us before we meet if you have any brief questions, and please join in on the discussion! We'll also be hearing from four staff members this month: 2/3 teacher Dave Middleton, 4/5 teacher Marian Wagner, special education staff member Nancy Gruber, and Connie Wood, our new middle school math teacher. This is a general membership meeting that's laying important groundwork for November, so board member attendance is especially requested.

Website Feedback

FOSB is beta testing a new website and wants your feedback.  Check it out and send your comments to Robin.

Middle School News

Halloween Dance/Block Party

This year, on Halloween, the middle school will celebrate with a dance and "block party" on the third floor.  Students will be able to move between a variety of stations and activities organized by ASB.  If you are available to chaperone or able to donate snacks and refreshments, please contact Kristina

Middle School Yearbook Cover Contest

The yearbook club is seeking front AND back cover designs for the middle school yearbook.  Black, white, and one additional color only.  Use  8 1/2 X 11 paper. Original artwork only. Do not put your name on the covers - designs remain anonymous until a cover is chosen.  Submit your artwork to Glyde by Monday, November 3rd for consideration.

MS Guild Potluck & Family Games Night

Join the Middle School Guild on Monday, November 3rd, from 6:30-8:30 pm, in the cafeteria (food) and auditorium (games). You can sign-up online at

http://bit.ly/1EpV5fZ to share a potluck dish or game, or to offer other ways to help like set-up, plates, flowers, and more. See attached flyer for more details, and RSVP to Robin Lofstrom, clevelandette@gmail.com.

With the help of our ASB students, we're keeping things light and simple. Trouble yourself less about what to bring and more about who to bring: you and your middle school student. And if you join a game (or host and teach one), it will be a great way to get to know someone new.
