Faces of Salmon Bay

This week we would like to introduce our Kindergarten and 1st Grade teachers. A special welcome to all of our new K/1 families as well!

Amy Coe

is teaching kindergarten this year and is in her 5th year teaching K-1 at Salmon Bay School.  She received her undergraduate degree from Boston University in Early Childhood Education, a program with a strong emphasis on experiential and developmentally appropriate learning.  She's excited to be finishing up her Masters in Education with a focus on arts integration.  Although it doesn't happen often enough for her liking, Amy loves traveling to new places.  Before starting her first teaching job she spent 6 months traveling around the world with her husband.  Lately her free time is spent getting settled into her new house

Dorothy Jacobsen is teaching kindergarten this year. Dorothy loves the compassion young children show to others and their exuberance and desire to learn.  Outside of school, Dorothy loves looking for new birds.

Carita Polin is teaching first grade this year.  She has spent the last 22 years teaching 4-8-year-olds (14 of them at Salmon Bay).  She feels fortunate to have worked in settings that allow her to teach to her students' strengths and interests, and to share with them her love of books, curiosity about how things work, and interest in different cultures, perspectives and traditions.  Above all she loves observing and facilitating as children make meaning of their world. Carita has one sister, a partner, two box turtles, two adult children, and two grandsons, all in the Seattle area, and an almost 91-year-old mom and two brothers on the East Coast. In her free time she likes to read, cook, garden and daydream. Some day she hopes to find time to make paintings again, and live in Italy for longer than a fortnight.

Sally Massa has been teaching at Salmon Bay for many years. This year she is teaching first grade. When not in her classroom, she enjoys knitting, reading and gardening.

After School Drama

Adult Volunteers Needed

Drama Skills Class for K - 5 Students

The Salmon Bay Drama Committee, in partnership with drama teaching artists Tara Kaine and Laura Knote, is offering two after school drama skills classes for K-5 students. Classes will occur after school (3:15-5:15) on Fridays for 8 weeks (Oct 3 - Nov 21), ending with a showcase presentation for families of class participants. There is an $85 student activity fee for each class.  Registration forms are due by Monday, September 29th.

Acting Exploration Class: This class is for actors just starting out their acting career, who want to practice the basics in a fun and dynamic way. Through role play, theatre games, and acting exercises we will build our confidence on stage and learn how to use our bodies and voices to develop characters that tell a story. We will practice auditioning and prepare for some of this year's Salmon Bay shows.

Acting Technique Class: This class is for seasoned actors who would like to polish their acting style. We will review basic acting techniques before delving into advanced work. Through role play, theatre games, and acting exercises, students will learn to make strong choices, develop realistic relationships, maintain believable characters on stage, and take risks. A portion of the class will be dedicated to self and peer assessment to support these goals.

Please sign your child up for the class that best fits their skill and experience. Teachers may switch kids after the first class if necessary. Each class is limited to 16 students, with a minimum of 10 required to guarantee the class. Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. Submit registration forms, medical contact information, and $85 student fee to the Drama Committee Mailbox in the main office.

Please contact Lori Mudge or Edith Fuchs with questions.

A Note From Your Volunteer Coordinators

Directory Forms

We are hard at work on the directory.  We hope to have a proof for you to review on curriculum night.  If you have not yet returned your directory form (or any other forms from your first day packet), please do so immediately.

Volunteer Opportunities

Please consider whether one of these volunteer opportunities might be a good fit for you.

  • Picture Day Support (see below)
  • Auction Chair
  • Painting Party
  •

Kudos to You

A hearty thank you to the many volunteers who have chaperoned field trips over the past few weeks.  Sailboat rides, walks to the locks, Cedar River watershed tours and more.  Another year of experiential learning is off to a great start!

And, special thanks to Katherine Ropp who input data from stacks and stacks of pink directory forms over the past few weeks.  You'll see the fruits of her labor soon!

If you have a thank you for a fellow community member, please stop by the bulletin board outside of the volunteer office and write a short note to be pinned on our "Kudos to You" bulletin board.

A Note From The Front Office
Curriculum Night
We are looking forward to seeing you at Curriculum Night.  Elementary parents, please come at 6 pm and go straight to your child's classroom.  Middle School parents, please arrive at 7pm and go to the auditorium.
Coho has agreed to provide childcare for 30 students from 6:00 - 7:30.  Cost is $5 per child and children must be potty trained.  To RSVP for a childcare spot, please contact Kristina

Picture Day
Picture Day is Tuesday, September 30th.  Your student should have come home with an order form.  Order forms should be returned to school by the 30th if you would like to order pictures.  Every child is photographed and we use the pictures for records and yearbooks.  If for some reason your student is absent on picture day or you are not satisfied with your photos, there will be a retake day.

We are in need of volunteers to help with straightening collars and stray cowlicks on Picture Day. Ideally we would have two volunteers for both the morning and afternoon. If you are available, please contact Jodi.

Student Drop-off
When dropping off students at school, please pull up to the curb so that students can exit from your vehicle onto the sidewalk safely.  We ask that students do not cross in the middle of the street or dash between buses and other moving cars. Crossing at designated sidewalks helps ensure everyone's safety.
Middle School News
ASB
There will be a lunch meeting Tuesday, September 30th in Room 306 to vote for 2014-15 ASB officers. All middle school students and teachers are welcome! There will be no meeting Thursday, October 1st due to camp.

Missing Beanie
The vintage beanie (with a wooden spinner on top) went missing from Glyde's mannikin Stella.  If you see this unique and special item around, please return it to Room 306.  No questions asked. Stella will be so happy to have it back.

Next Meeting

The next FOSB meeting is October 16th.

Garden Committee

A big thank you to those who came out for the first garden work party! It was great to see parents and kids helping sweep, prune, and water! Although it was a small crew, we got a lot done. We made great progress on the back planters on the playground and the front slope.

We could still use some pruning help on the front street (65th) east slope section. We will be working on acquiring some additional plantings to fill in that side soon. If any parents are interested in meeting in an ad-hoc manner (or having your scout troop earn a badge), please email Laurache@microsoft.com or Richbris@hotmail.com to arrange a date/time to meet.  Gardening suggestions and ideas are always welcome.

A Note of Thanks

Salmon Bay staff and coaches would like to thank FOSB for providing a First Aid and CPR training course this month. Student safety is important to us and we greatly appreciate your generosity in providing this training. We learned a lot and had some fun along the way too!

October is Walk-n-Wheel Month @ Salmon Bay

Salmon Bay is excited to participate in the annual Walk-n-Wheel month this October, promoting healthy, alternative ways of getting to school each day.

Each Friday during Walk-n-Wheel month we will be hosting a welcome station for kids who walk, bike, scooter or ride the bus to school.

We will be handing out punch cards to students to keep track of their progress.  If you would like to lead a Walking School Buses or Bike Train let us know!

If you must drive a car to school but want to participate, consider parking 4-5 blocks away from the school and walking in with your child.  Who knows, it may become a routine.

We need volunteers to host our welcome stations!  Please contact your friendly SB Bikes liasons: karen@nixnux.org  or  walkerlockhart@gmail.com  and join in the fun!
