Faces of Salmon Bay
This week we are continuing our staff introductions by focusing on the 6th grade team.
In addition to the particular instructional role they play in 6th grade, we've asked each individual to share something about themselves unrelated to Salmon Bay.

Jennifer Fanning teaches Homeroom  and 6th grade Language Arts. This is Jennifer's third year teaching at Salmon Bay, and her first year teaching 6th grade. Jennifer appreciates the fact that she's gotten to work with different teams at school and knows teachers and students at different grade levels. She misses her former students very much, but is excited about her new classes. When not teaching, Jennifer loves reading and doing fun stuff with her family and friends.

Joel Maier is beginning
his 18th year at Salmon Bay (17 of those years have been in 6th grade!). Joel teaches 6th grade science, Homeroom and a typing class.  He also coaches the girls and boys school soccer teams.
Joel received his Undergrad Psychology degree from Pacific Lutheran University in 1989 and a Masters in Education from the University of Washington in 1996. When not teaching, he and his wife are busy raising 3 kids. Their oldest just started Gonzaga University. They also have a sophomore at Ballard High School and an 8th grader here at Salmon Bay.  All 3 kids went through Salmon Bay K-8 and had Joel as their 6th grade science teacher. Joel says they survived without too much scarring!

Jon Olver teaches Homeroom and 6th grade Math. He is a self-proclaimed recovering math-phobic. Check his fusion page for many handouts on math & brain development. If you are interested in playing music, Jon reminds everyone to keep a heads up for information on this year's Rock for FOSB, where parents get to mingle and make music!

Katie Hayes is starting her 5th year at Salmon Bay.  She has a homeroom and teaches Ancient Civilizations. Katie loves history and had an amazing opportunity to travel with a group of teachers from around the U.S. to Turkey this summer. She is excited to bring what she learned over the summer into her classroom. Outside of school Katie enjoys gardening, cooking, reading, backpacking and traveling to interesting new places both near and far. Katie also is one of the Salmon Bay soccer coaches.

Kurt Litsinger teaches Special Education and a 6th grade Homeroom. Outside of school, he races bicycles, enjoys hiking and takes care of his dachshund, Mario. Before Kurt started teaching, he was a genetic researcher.

Glyde Hart King is in her 8th year teaching at Salmon Bay. Glyde has teaching endorsements in Biology, General Science, LA and drama, with additional strengths in media, journalism and French. This year Glyde will have a 6th grade homeroom for the first time! Her drama curriculum includes Macbeth, Fairy Tale Theatre (a musical collaboration with senior band) and 6th grade young playwrights this year. In addition, Glyde will head ASB, coach the girls' volleyball team, and edit the yearbook. Outside of school, she loves to play tennis and can be seen on the pitch as a Grade 7 referee, or on a stool at the George & Dragon Club watching English soccer. Glyde has a son in 10th grade at Ballard High School.

After School Drama

Drama Skills Class for K - 5 Students

The Salmon Bay Drama Committee, in partnership with drama teaching artists Tara Kaine and Laura Knote, is offering two after school drama skills classes for K-5 students. Classes will occur after school (3:15-5:15) on Fridays for 8 weeks (October 3 - November 21), ending with a showcase presentation for families of class participants. There is an $85 student activity fee for each class.

Acting Exploration Class: This class is for actors just starting out their acting career, who want to practice the basics in a fun and dynamic way.  Through role play, theatre games, and acting exercises we will build our confidence on stage and learn how to use our bodies and voices to develop characters that tell a story. We will practice auditioning and prepare for some of this year's Salmon Bay shows.

Acting Technique Class: This class is for seasoned actors who would like to polish their acting style.  We will review basic acting techniques before delving into advanced work.  Through role play, theatre games, and acting exercises, students will learn to make strong choices, develop realistic relationships, maintain believable characters on stage, and take risks.  A portion of the class will be dedicated to self and peer assessment to support these goals.

Please sign your child up for the class that best fits their skill and experience. Teachers may switch kids after the first class if necessary. Each class is limited to 16 students, with a minimum of 10 required to guarantee the class. Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. Registrations will be considered complete once the registration form, medical contact information, and $85 student fee have been submitted to the Drama Committee Mailbox in the main office. The deadline for registration is Monday, September 29, though the classes may fill before then. Please contact Lori Mudge or Edith Fuchs if you have questions.

Counselor's Corner

Need Roots of Empathy Family/Baby Volunteers
Do you have a 2-4 month old baby?  Are you willing to bring your baby to school once every three weeks (beginning in October) to help teach kids empathy?  If so, read on...

Salmon Bay will be using Roots of Empathy (a social skills program) in our 5th grade classes again this year.  As part of the program, the students get to know a family and baby and watch that baby grow and develop throughout the year.  By encouraging observation of the baby's emotions, the program teaches children how to recognize their own feelings and understand the feelings of others.

If you have a baby between the ages of 2-4 months and are interested in becoming a Roots of Empathy Family or learning more about the program, please contact Markos Weiss at 206-252-1742 or mmweiss@seattleschools.org.

Second Counselor Coming Soon

We have posted a counselor position to strengthen the supports and services we offer as a school.  We will be interviewing for this position in the coming week.  If you have completed the interview training and are interested in serving on the interview committee, please email Neil.

Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) Information

Coho will be providing childcare for up to 45 kids.  Please email Suzanne at suzaroo@gmail.com to reserve your child's spot.  Please include name and age.  Younger children are ok, but must be potty trained.  You can check the sign up list here to confirm your child is registered.  We hope to see lots of new and not so new faces!

Please keep an eye open for an upcoming survey about FOSB. If you'd like to provide any input on the survey, please contact Lance at: LanceCAdams@hotmail.com
