Faces of Salmon Bay
With all of the new faces in our community, we'd like to take an opportunity to introduce several staff members to you in each issue of the weekly Bulletin.  Today, we are focusing on our front office staff.  In addition to the particular role they play in the office, we've asked each individual to also share something about themselves unrelated to Salmon Bay.

Office staff pictured from left to right:
Caitlin Racey, Carrie Wallace, Dena Parmer and Mariah Rosdahl

Caitlin Racey is our Attendance Secretary. You'll find her in the front office and hear from her if your child is absent from school. Caitlin is the parent of a current 7th grader and an alumni who is now a 9th grade student at Ballard High school.  She loves going for walks with her dog Enzo and when she has a quiet moment, she loves to read.

Carrie Wallace is our Fiscal Secretary. In addition to tracking our school funds, she provides support in the office and the lunchroom.  Carrie is a lifetime resident of Ballard. When not at Salmon Bay, she plays league tennis, volunteers at local theatres, and belongs to a book club. She also enjoys long walks on the beach.

Dena Parmer is our new Administrative Secretary.  You'll see her in the front office taking care of business!  Dena is a second generation Seattle Public Schools graduate. She has three children (3rd, 7th, and 9th  grades) but they do not attend Salmon Bay.  Dena has spent her entire adult life working in the field of non-profit education, except for a one year break during which she did marketing and promotions for the Jimi Hendrix family.

Mariah Rosdahl Rosenblum MSN RN is our new School Nurse. Mariah will be at Salmon Bay on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and every other Friday. She has shared the following reminder from the Nurse's Office: Eat with the seasons! The fall harvest is full of vitamins and minerals that can help your kids stay healthy through the impending cold season.
Mariah moved to Seattle from Coeur d'Alene in 2001, and happily lives downtown with her husband (they were married this summer!) and their two beagles, The Baroness and Ducky Lou. Her favorite countries visited so far are The Philippines and Macedonia.

Bulletin Submissions

We welcome submissions to our weekly Bulletin.
Email submissions to the Jodi or Kristina by
noon on Thursdays.
A Note From Your Volunteer Coordinators
Welcome back to all of our returning families and a very warm welcome to all of our new families!

Meet Your Volunteer Coordinators
Salmon Bay employs two part-time volunteer coordinators to help with the needs of our parent body and staff.  The volunteer coordinators are a great starting point if you have questions or concerns and aren't sure where to direct them.  Please call, email, or stop by their offices (located to the right upon front door entry).

Jodi Russell is the Elementary Volunteer Coordinator. She is excited to be stepping into this new role and to help everyone find a volunteer opportunity that matches their available time and talents. You can reach Jodi at jrrussell@seattleschools.org or 206.252.1731.

Kristina Cerise is the Middle School Volunteer  Coordinator. She promises to find you a job that is a "just right" fit for your interests and availability.  You can reach Kristina at kristinacerise@gmail.com or 206.252.1730.

Immediate Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is a great way to build community while making a difference in the lives of our students. You should have received a volunteer interest survey in your student's first day packets.  Please fill that out and return it as soon as possible to help our volunteer coordinators make connections between school needs and community member interests.

Please consider whether one of these volunteer opportunities might be a good fit for you.

  • Elementary FOSB Treasurer
  • Fall Book Fair Coordinator
For more information about these needs (or to volunteer), contact Jodi (jrrussell@seattleschools.org) or Kristina (kristinacerise@gmail.com).

A Note From The Front Office

Salmon Bay Family,

Wow! What a great start to the school year! We are quite excited to be at Salmon Bay and the short week went smashingly well. We spent lots of time asking questions and understanding how things work. You may have noticed we have made some slight adjustments and we're mostly hearing that they are for the better. We will send an additional communication this weekend to detail both new and existing practices.

Please don't hesitate to contact either one of us with comments, concerns, or questions. Although positive feedback is always appreciated, the less than positive is equally important to help shape future decisions. We want to hear from you! Again, we are proud to serve this community and we are very hopeful for an excellent year of learning, celebration, and growth.
In partnership,

Darren and Neil

First Day Packet Reminder
By now, your student should have brought home an envelope of informational papers and required forms.  If you have not yet received that packet, please call the front office (206.252.1720).  If you have your packet but have not yet completed the forms, please take time this weekend to do so and return the forms with your student on Monday.  The forms are an important (though tedious) part of getting the school year off to a safe and efficient start.
After School Program
Registration for fall After School Program (ASP) offerings for our 2nd - 5th grade students (e.g. chess club, Legos club, sewing and cake-decorating) begins Monday, September 15th. Registration packets will be sent electronically soon and hard copies will be available in the Volunteer Coordinators' office.  For more information contact Mindy mindy.terence@gmail.com.

For information on after school drama opportunities - including the upcoming "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" K-8 musical - see the After School Drama section below.

After School Drama

Salmon Bay has a robust after school drama program, which includes three after school plays and several after school classes offered over the course of our school year.

After school drama activities are organized and produced by our Drama Committee, a group of parent volunteers, and receive the support of FOSB and the Administration.  Our committee is dedicated to bringing skilled directors and teaching artists to work with the students of Salmon Bay.

K-8 Play

The first play of our 2014-2015 school year is our fourth annual K-8 collaboration, the musical "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." Auditions are open to all students and will be held after school the week of September 22nd. Performances will be December 11-14. The Drama Committee will hold an audition workshop and parent information night on Monday, September 15th. See the flyer attached to this Bulletin for additional details.

Other Drama Committee Offerings

This fall the Drama Committee is also organizing a series of drama skills classes for elementary students. In the winter we will produce "The Jungle Book" for K-4 students. In the spring, we will produce a middle school play, "Holes,"  after school drama classes for middle school students, and a play writing workshop for 4-5 students.

For more information about Salmon Bay's after school drama program, please contact our Drama Committee co-chairs, Lori Mudge and Edith Fuchs at lorimudge@comcast.net or Edith.Fuchs@gmail.com.

Next Meeting

FOSB will have a meeting on Thursday, September 18th at 6:30 pm in the auditorium. The agenda includes an opportunity to meet our new Administrators, hear about the work of FOSB and its committees, and dedicated time for an open forum Q&A. Stay tuned to hear if Coho will be providing childcare for this meeting.

Please keep an eye open for an upcoming survey about FOSB. If you'd like to provide any input on the survey, please contact Lance at: LanceCAdams@hotmail.com

If you missed our August 19th Q and A with Neil and Darren, check out the minutes.

Class Liaisons Needed
FOSB's new Class Liaison Committee needs you - especially if you are a Kindergarten, fourth grade, or middle school parent.  This committee is dedicated to helping families connect with FOSB and improving communication about FOSB activities and business.  Class Liaisons will represent parents in a particular class or grade level.  Liaisons will:
  • Rotate attendance at monthly FOSB meetings (depending on the number of liaisons, may attend 1-2 FOSB meetings per year) and summarize key issues and topics for dissemination by liaisons.
  • Send monthly emails to class/grade with updates from FOSB meetings and bring relevant topics from class/grade parents to FOSB meetings.
  • Coordinate with other liaisons as needed.
If you are interested in serving as a class or grade level liaison, please email Hillary at hikkerfeet@comcast.net.
